GEOGRAPHY
Portugalissituatedatthesouth-westpointofEuropeandalsoincludestheMadeiraandAzoresarchipelagosintheAtlanticOcean.MainlandPortugaloccupiesanareaof88,889km2.Itis218kmwideand561kmlong.Ithas832kmofAtlanticcoastanda1,215kmborderwithSpain.

TheAzoresaresituatedintheAtlanticOceanbetweenEuropeandNorthAmerica.Theyhaveanareaof2,355km2andconsistofnineislands-SãoMiguelandSantaMariaintheEasternGroup,Terceira,Graciosa,SãoJorge,PicoandFaialintheCentralGroupandFloresandCorvointheWesternGroup.IttakesabouttwohourstogetfromtheAzorestomainlandPortugalbyplane.

TheMadeiraArchipelagohasanareaof741km2andliesintheAtlanticOceanabout500kmfromtheAfricancoastand1,000kmfromtheEuropeancontinent(1½hoursflyingtimefromLisbon).ItconsistsoftheislandsofMadeiraandPortoSantoandtheuninhabitedDesertasandSelvagensislands,whicharenaturereserves.
