ThequietofasummermorninginPaloAlto,Californiawasshatteredbyascreechingsquadcarsirenaspolicesweptthroughthecitypickingupcollegestudentsinasurprisemassarrest.Eachsuspectwaschargedwithafelony,warnedofhisconstitutionalrights,spread-eagledagainstthecar,searched,handcuffedandcartedoffinthebackseatofthesquadcartothepolicestationforbooking.
Afterfingerprintingandthepreparationoridentificationformsforhis"jacket"(centralinformationfile),eachprisonerwasleftisolatedinadetentioncelltowonderwhathehaddonetogethimselfintothismess.Afterawhile,hewasblindfoldedandtransportedtothe"StanfordCountyPrison."Herehebegantheprocessofbecomingaprisoner-strippednaked,skin-searched,delousedandissuedauniform,bedding,soap,andtowel.
Thewardenofferedanimpromptuwelcome:"Asyouprobablyknow,I'myourwarden.Allofyouhaveshownthatyouareunabletofunctionoutsideintherealworldforonereasonoranother-thatsomehowyoulacktheresponsibilityofgoodcitizensofthisgreatcountry.Weofthisprison,yourcorrectionalstaff,aregoingtohelpyoulearnwhatyourresponsibilitiesascitizensofthiscountryare.Herearetherules.Sometimeinthenearfuture,therewillbeacopyoftherulespostedineachofthecells.Weexpectyoutoknowthemandtobeabletorecitethembynumber.Ifyoufollowalloftheserulesandkeepyourhandsclean,repentforyourmisdeeds,andshowaproperattitudeofpenitence,youandIwillgetalongjustfine."
