Abstract
Inthispaper,weproposeanovelapproachtodesigningamulti-wavelengthBrillouin/erbiumlaserbasedonasymmetricfiberMach-Zehnderinterferometerloopfilter(AFMLF)fordoubleBrillouinfrequencyshiftspacing.Themulti-wavelengthBrillouin/erbiumlaser(MWBEL)ishighlyefficient,stableandcompact,andprovideshighoutputpowerwhileminimizingtheimpactofundesirableeffectssuchasstimulatedBrillouinscattering(SBS)andstimulatedRamanscattering(SRS).TheAFMLFdesignprovideshighopticalisolationandlowchannelcross-talk,reducingthecomplexityofthesystem.
Introduction
Multi-wavelengthBrillouin/erbiumlasers(MWBELs)havegainedsignificantattentioninrecentyearsduetotheirpotentialapplicationsinopticalcommunicationsystemsthatrequirevariouswavelengthsforefficienttransmission.However,conventionalMWBELsarelimitedbythesmallspacingbetweentheBrillouinfrequencyshift(BFS),limitingthenumberofwavelengthsthatcanbegenerated.Moreover,theefficiencyandstabilityofthesesystemsarealsoimpactedbyunwantedeffectssuchasstimulatedBrillouinscattering(SBS)andstimulatedRamanscattering(SRS).Therefore,thedesignofahigh-efficiency,stableandcompactMWBELwithlargeBFSspacingisofgreatscientificandcommercialinterest.
DesignofAFMLF-basedMWBEL
TheproposedMWBELsystemisbasedonanasymmetricfiberMach-Zehnderinterferometerloopfilter(AFMLF)whichconsistsoftwosingle-modefiberswithdissimilarwaistdiametersconnectedbyauniformfiber.TheAFMLFdesignprovideshighopticalisolationandlowchannelcross-talk,reducingthecomplexityofthesystem.Furthermore,theAFMLFeffectivelysuppressesSBSandSRS,resultinginhighefficiencyandstability.
TheAFMLF-basedMWBELsystememploystwoerbium-dopedfiberamplifiers(EDFAs)toamplifytheinputsignal,whichisthensplitintotwobranches.OnebranchisconnectedtoanAFMLF,whichactsasanotchfilterforthedesiredwavelength.TheotherbranchisconnectedtoastandardfiberloopwithaBragggratingtoremoveunwantedwavelengths.Thecombinedoutputofthetwobranchesisdirectedtoahigh-powerisolatortosuppressreflections.
