Introduction
Saturatedsoil-structuresystemiscommonlyencounteredinpracticalengineeringprojectssuchasbridges,offshoreplatforms,anddams.Thedynamicresponseofsuchsystemsundermovingloadsisacomplexphenomenonthataffectsthestructuralsafetyandserviceability.Inthispaper,wepresentastudyonthedynamicresponseanalysisofasaturatedsoil-structuresystemundermovingloads.
Methodology
Thefiniteelementmethodwasusedtomodelthesystem.Atwo-dimensionalmodelwasdevelopedusingABAQUSsoftware.ThesoilwasmodeledusingamodifiedMohr-Coulombmodel,andthestructurewasmodeledusingbeamelements.Amovingloadwasappliedonthestructuretoinvestigatethedynamicresponseofthesystem.TheNewmarktimeintegrationmethodwasusedtosolvethedynamicequilibriumequations.
Results
Theanalysisshowedthatthedynamicresponseofthesystemissignificantlyaffectedbythesoilpropertiesandthestructuralparameters.Thesoilstiffness,damping,andstrengthhadaprofoundeffectonthedynamicresponseofthesystem.Themaximumdisplacementanddeformationoccurredinthesoillayerdirectlybelowthestructure,andthepeakdynamicresponsewasobservedinthemid-spanofthestructure.Thedynamicbehaviorofthesystemalsoshowedsignificanttime-dependency,withtheresponsechangingovertimeduetotheviscoelasticbehaviorofthesoil.
Discussion
Theanalysisresultshighlighttheimportanceofconsideringthedynamicresponseofthesaturatedsoil-structuresystemundermovingloads.Thesoilpropertiesarecriticalindeterminingthedynamicresponseofthesystem.Thestiffness,damping,andstrengthofthesoilallaffecttheresponseofthesystem.Thestructuralparameters,suchasthenaturalfrequencyanddampingratio,alsoimpactthedynamicbehaviorofthesystem.Thetime-dependentcharacteristicsofthesystemalsoneedtobetakenintoaccount,especiallyinlong-termmonitoringofthesystem.
