Introduction
GSM(GlobalSystemforMobileCommunications)isawidelyusedcellularnetworktechnologythatenablesmobilecommunicationthroughouttheworld.Thetechnologyoffersmanyadvantages,includinghigh-qualityvoiceanddatatransmission,low-costimplementation,andextensivenetworkcoverage.However,asthenumberofmobileuserscontinuestogrow,sodoesthedemandforefficientutilizationofnetworkresources.Inparticular,theproblemofinterferencebetweenthedifferentGSMfrequenciesposesasignificantchallengetonetworkoperators.Inthispaper,wewilldiscussthetechniqueknownasJumpingFrequencyOptimization(JFO),whichprovidesasolutiontothisproblem.
Background
TheGSMnetworkoperatesusingafrequencydivisionmultiplexing(FDM)technique,whichallocatesdifferentfrequencychannelstodifferentusersinthesamecell.Eachfrequencychannelisdividedintoeighttimeslots,eachofwhichcansupportasingleuser.Asthenumberofusersincreases,thefrequencychannelscanbecomecongested,leadingtointerferenceandreducedcallquality.
Tomitigatethisproblem,networkoperatorscanemployfrequencyhoppingtechniques,wherebyeachuser'scalljumpsbetweendifferentfrequencies,ratherthanremainingonasinglefrequencythroughoutthecall.Thisreducesthelikelihoodofinterference,astheuserisonlyonanygivenfrequencyforashortperiod.
However,frequencyhoppingcanleadtootherproblems,suchasincreasedcallsetuptimeandreducednetworkcapacityduetothetimerequiredforhopping.Toaddresstheseissues,JFOisused,whichinvolvessmarthoppingthattakesintoaccountthecurrentnetworkconditions.
JumpingFrequencyOptimization
JFOisatechniquethatoptimizesthefrequencyhoppingpatternbyusingalgorithmstoselectthebestsetoffrequenciesforagivennetworkconfiguration.TheprimaryobjectiveofJFOistoreducethenumberofhopsrequiredwhilestillminimizingthechancesofinterference.Thealgorithmtakesintoaccountthetrafficconditionsoneachchannel,thesignalquality,andthedistancebetweenusers,amongotherfactors.
TheJFOalgorithmselectsasetoffrequenciesthatareoptimalforaparticularcell'strafficconditions.Thissetoffrequenciesisknownasthehoppingsequence
