Abstract
TheAsia-PacificEconomicCooperation(APEC)isknownasasubstantialplatformforeconomiccooperationandintegrationwithmembereconomiescomprisingofbothdevelopedanddevelopingcountries.OneoftheessentialaspectsofAPEC'seconomiccooperationandintegrationisthedevelopmentofFreeTradeAgreements(FTA)withintheregion.ThispaperanalysesthefactorsforthedevelopmentofinternalFTAswithinAPEC,includingtheregionaleconomicandpoliticalenvironment,thechallengesandopportunitiesofglobalisation,thepoliticalwillofmemberstates,andtheeconomicinterestsofrespectivemembers.ThepaperalsoprovidesseveralpolicyrecommendationsforAPECcountriestopromotefurtherregionaleconomicintegration.
Introduction
TheAsia-Pacificregionisoneofthefastest-growingregionsglobally,witheconomiesrangingfromsmall,open,andresource-basedtolargeanddiversifiedeconomies.Withthisvariedtapestryinmind,theregionrequiresrobustcooperationandintegrationtoensuremutualgrowthandprosperity,includingfreetrade.FreeTradeAgreements(FTA)areregionalintegrationtoolsthatgovernmentsusetostimulategrowthandsecuretheirmarkets'access.TheAsia-PacificEconomicCooperation(APEC)hasbeeninstrumentalinpromotingfreetradeandadvocatingforeconomiccooperationwithintheregion.InternalFTAsarecentraltotheAPEC'smissiontowardspromotingfreetrade.Inlightofthis,thepurposeofthispaperistoanalysethereasonsandfactorsforthedevelopmentofinternalFTAswithinAPEC.
RegionalEconomicandPoliticalEnvironment
APECwasfoundedin1989withtheobjectiveofpromotingfreetradeandsatisfyingthedemandforeconomicinterdependencewithintheAsia-Pacificregion.Theregion'ssizeandnewlyemergingeconomiesprovidedanidealenvironmentforenhancedregionalcooperationandthesubsequentestablishmentoffreetradeagreementswithinAPEC.APEC'sobjectiveisoftenviewedasrelativelynarrowinscope,focusingmainlyontradeliberalisation,investmentliberalisation,andcooperationinspecificsectorsinanefforttoadvancetheregioneconomically.Additionally,thefocusisonspreadingandsharingprosperityacrosstheregion.Nevertheless,thefundamentalobjective
