Introduction
TheChineseLibraryClassification(CLC)isawidelyusedsubjectclassificationsystemforlibrariesinChina.TheCLCsystemisbasedontheDeweyDecimalClassification(DDC)andLibraryofCongressClassification(LCC),butitisspecificallydesignedfortheneedsofChineselibraries.ThispaperwillfocusontheprofessionalEnglishclassificationresearchoftheCLCsystem,providingareviewoftheexistingliteratureandacriticalevaluationofthesystem.
LiteratureReview
TheCLCsystemwasfirstpublishedin1956andhasbeenrevisedseveraltimessincethen.Itcontains26majorcategoriesandmorethan90,000subclasses.ThesystemhasbeenwidelyusedinacademicandresearchlibrariesinChina,andithasbeenadoptedbymanyotherlibrariesinAsia.However,therehasbeenlittleresearchdoneontheCLCsysteminEnglish.
OneoftheearlieststudiesoftheCLCsysteminEnglishwasconductedbyShuyongJiangin1995.JiangexaminedthesimilaritiesanddifferencesbetweentheCLCandtheDDCsystems.JiangfoundthattheCLCsystemismoredetailedthantheDDCsystem,especiallyintheareasofChinesehistory,language,andliterature.JiangalsofoundthattheCLCsystemhasamorelogicalandconsistentstructurethantheDDCsystem.
AnotherstudyoftheCLCsysteminEnglishwasconductedbyJianzhongQinin2000.QincomparedtheCLCsystemwiththeLCCsystemandfoundthatthetwosystemshaveasimilarstructure,buttheCLCsystemismoredetailedintheareasofChinesehistory,culture,andliterature.QinalsofoundthattheCLCsystemismoreuser-friendlythantheLCCsystembecauseitiseasiertounderstandanduse.
AmorerecentstudyoftheCLCsysteminEnglishwasconductedbyXiaoyangWuin2018.WuexaminedtheeffectivenessoftheCLCsysteminauniversitylibraryinChina.WufoundthattheCLCsystemiseffectivefororganizingandsearchinglibrarymaterials,especiallyintheareasofChinesehistory,culture,andliterature.WualsofoundthattheCLCsystemiseasytouseandunderstandforbothlibrariansandusers.
CriticalEvaluation
Overall,theCLCsystemisawell-designedclassificationsystemthatmeetstheneedsofChineselibraries.However,therearesomeareaswherethesystemcouldbeimproved.Forexample,thesystemcouldbemoredetailedintheareas
