Introduction
Vietnameselanguage,beingtheofficiallanguageoftheSocialistRepublicofVietnam,hasastronginfluenceonthecountry’sculture,mindset,andtradition.Alongwithit,Englishhasemergedasagloballanguagethatopensdoorstointernationalopportunities,business,andconnectivity.Hence,English-VietnamesebilingualismhasbecomeanecessarycomponentofeducationinVietnam.ThispaperintendstodiscusstheconceptofpositivetransferinEnglishlanguageteachinginVietnam,asitcanhelpstudentsindevelopinglanguageproficiencyandacceleratethelearningprocess.
PositiveTransfer:DefinitionandImportance
Positivetransferisaconceptinlinguisticswhichreferstothetransferofthelearners'priorknowledgeandskillsintheirfirstlanguagetotheirlearningofasecondlanguage(L2)(Ellis,1994).ItisacrucialtoolinfacilitatingL2acquisitionasitencouragesthelearnerstorelyontheircognitiveskillstonavigatethetargetlanguagestructure.Inthisway,thelearnerscandeveloptheirL2proficiencyrapidlyandbecomemorecompetentcommunicators.PositivetransferoftheVietnameselanguagecanbebeneficialforEnglishlanguagelearnersinVietnamasitcanhelpthemdeveloptheirreadingandwritingskills.
PositiveTransferinEnglish-VietnameseBilingualism
TheuseofpositivetransferinEnglish-VietnamesebilingualismallowsstudentstofamiliarizethemselveswiththeEnglishlanguagestructurewithminimaleffort.AlthoughEnglishandVietnamesevarysignificantlyintermsofgrammar,syntax,andvocabulary,theyshareafewsimilaritiesthatcanbeusefulinlanguagelearning.Forinstance,VietnameseandEnglishbothfollowthesubject-verb-object(SVO)sentencestructure,whichmakesiteasierforstudentstounderstandthefundamentalrulesofEnglishsentenceconstruction(Brown,2000).Similarly,Vietnamesepossessesabroadrangeofpronouns,includingfirst-person,second-person,andthird-personpronouns,whichcanfacilitatethelearner'sunderstandingofEnglishpronounstructures.
