Abstract
Inthispaper,wedescribethedesign,fabricationandcharacterizationofahigh-speedtunablelaserbasedontheFiberBraggGratingFabry-Perot(FPF)filterstructure.Theproposedlaserisabletooperateatahighspeedandcanbetunedoverawidewavelengthrangewithalowtuningcurrent.TheFPFfilterprovidesahigh-Qresonanceataspecificwavelength,whichcanbeusedasacavityforthelasertogeneratehigh-poweroutputatthedesiredwavelength.Theproposedlaserhasawiderangeofapplicationsinopticalcommunicationsystems,spectroscopyandsensing.
Introduction
Tunablelasersareessentialcomponentsinmanyopticalcommunicationsystems,spectroscopyandsensingapplications.Theyareusedinwavelengthdivisionmultiplexing(WDM)systems,wheremultiplesignalsaretransmittedoverasinglefiberbyusingdifferentwavelengths.Tunablelasersarealsousedinspectroscopyandsensingapplications,wheretheabilitytotunethelaserwavelengthiscriticalforcapturingthedesiredspectralinformation.However,developingtunablelasersthatcanoperateathighspeed,withlowtuningcurrentandawidetuningrangeremainsachallenge.
FiberBraggGratingFabry-Perot(FPF)filterstructureisapromisingtechnologyforhigh-speedtunablelasers.FPFstructuresconsistofaFiberBraggGrating(FBG)andaFabry-Perot(FP)filterinseries.TheFBGprovidesahigh-Qresonanceataspecificwavelength,whiletheFPfilterprovidesafreespectralrange(FSR)forwavelengthtuning.ByvaryingtheFPcavitylength,theresonantwavelengthoftheFBGcanbetunedovertheFSRoftheFPfilter.Inthispaper,weproposeahigh-speedtunablelaserbasedontheFPFfilterstructure.
Design
Theproposedlaserconsistsofasemiconductorgainsection,aFPFfilter,andaphasesection.Thesemiconductorgainsectionprovidesopticalgaintothelaser,whiletheFPFfilterprovidesacavityforthelasertogeneratehigh-poweroutputatthedesiredwavelength.Thephasesectionconsistsofaphaseshifterandavoltage-controlledphasemodulator(VCPM)forachievingsingle-modeoperationandwavelengthtuning.ThephaseshifterisusedtoadjustthephaseoflightreflectedbytheFBG,whiletheVCPMisusedtomodulatethewavelengthofthelaser.
