1.Introduction
Asmobilecommunicationnetworkscontinuetoevolve,thedemandforefficientandeffectivewirelesscoverageincreases.Oneofthemainchallengesfacedbynetworkplannersisthedesignofanoptimizedcellcoverageplanthatcanprovidereliablesignalqualitytoalluserswhileminimizinginfrastructurecosts.TheVoronoidiagram,amathematicalconceptintroducedbyGeorgyVoronoiin1908,canbeaninvaluabletoolinaddressingthischallenge.Inthispaper,wediscusstheuseoftheVoronoidiagramtosimulatecellcoverageinasmallarea,andhowthiscanbeusedtooptimizenetworkdeployment.
2.VoronoiDiagram
TheVoronoidiagramisageometricstructurethatpartitionsaspaceintoasetofpolygonalregionssuchthateachregioncontainsallpointsclosertoitsgeneratingpointthantoanyotherpointinthespace.Thisdiagramiscommonlyusedinmanyfields,includingurbanplanning,computergraphics,andwirelesscommunication.Inthecontextofwirelesscommunication,theVoronoidiagramcanbeusedtosimulatecellcoveragebyassigningeachcellsiteanassociatedVoronoiregion.
3.SimulatingWirelessCoverage
TosimulatewirelesscoverageusingtheVoronoidiagram,asetofcellsitesisfirstselectedwithintheareaofinterest.TheVoronoidiagramisthengeneratedusingthelocationsofthesesitesasgeneratingpoints.EachVoronoiregionisassignedtoaspecificcellsite,andtheboundariesofeachregionaredefinedbythepointsequidistanttotwoormoreneighboringcellsites.
Thesimulationprocessinvolvesdeterminingthesignalstrengthateachpointwithintheareaofinterest.Thiscanbeachievedusingpropagationmodelsthattakeintoaccountparameterssuchasfrequency,power,andterrain.Oncethesignalstrengthiscalculated,thecoverageareaofeachcellsitecanbedeterminedbyidentifyingthepointswithinitsassociatedVoronoiregionthatmeetapredefinedsignalqualitythreshold.Thisthresholdrepresentstheminimumsignalqualitythatmustbeachievedforasignaltobeusable.
