Introduction:
ControllerAreaNetwork(CAN)isawidelyusedcommunicationprotocolinvariousindustries,includingautomotive,aerospace,andindustrialautomation.TMS320F2812microcontrollerisapopularchoiceforimplementingCANcommunicationinembeddedsystems.Inthisessay,wewilldiscussthedetailsofCANcommunicationandhowitcanbeimplementedusingTMS320F2812.
CANProtocol:
CANisatwo-wirebuscommunicationprotocolthatusesadifferentialsignaltotransmitdataoverthenetwork.Itisdesignedtohaverobustfault-tolerantcapabilityforuseinharshenvironments.TherearetwotypesofdevicesinCANcommunication,i.e.,CANnodeandCANbus.
CANNode:
TheCANnodeisadevicethatcommunicatesovertheCANbusnetworkandiscapableofsendingandreceivingmessages.EachCANnodehasaunique11-bitidentifierthatidentifiesthenodeonthenetwork.MultipleCANnodescanbeconnectedtothesamebus,makingitamulti-mastercommunicationprotocol.
CANBus:
ACANbusisatwo-wirecommunicationnetworkthatconnectsmultipleCANnodes.TheCANbushasahigh-speeddifferentialsignalthattransmitsthedataoverthenetwork.TheCANbusoperatesona‘broadcast’principle,i.e.,thedataissenttoallthenodesonthenetwork,andeachnodedecideswhethertoacceptorrejectthedatabasedonitsidentifier.
TMS320F2812CANModule:
TheTMS320F2812microcontrollerhasabuilt-inCANmodulethatcanbeusedtoimplementaCANnetwork.TheCANmodulesupportsamaximumoftwoCANnodeswithadatarateofupto1Mbps.TheTMS320F2812hastwophysicalCANmodules,eachhavingtwobuffersfortransmittingandreceivingdata.Eachbuffercanstoreeightdatabytesanda29-bitidentifier.
TMS320F2812CANConfiguration:
TheCANmoduleinTMS320F2812canbeconfiguredtooperateindifferentmodes,includingNormal,Loopback,Silent,LoopbackSilent,ExternalTx,andExternalRx.IntheNormalmode,theCANmodulesendsandreceivesdataoverthenetwork,whileintheLoopbackmode,theCANmodulesendsthedatatoitselffortestingpurposes.TheSilentmodeoperatesastheNormalmode,butitdoesnotsendacknowledgments,andtheLoopbackSilentoperatesastheLoopbackmodebutdoesnotsendacknowledgments.TheExternalTxandRxmodesareusedinconjunctionwithanexternaltran
