Introduction:
Thebandlettransformisapowerfultoolusedindigitalimageprocessingforrepresentingandanalyzingimages.Ithasgainedpopularityovertheyearsduetoitsabilitytoefficientlycaptureimagestructuresatmultiplescalesandorientations.Inthispaper,weproposeafastandefficient2ndgenerationbandlettransformthatisoptimizedbasedondirection.Theproposedbandlettransformaimstoenhancetheefficiencyoftheexistingtransformbyincorporatingdirectionaloptimization.
Background:
The2ndgenerationbandlettransformhasbeenwidelyusedinimageprocessingapplicationssuchasimagecompression,denoising,andsuper-resolution.Thebandlettransformdecomposesanimageintoasetofbandletcoefficients,whicharesimilartowaveletcoefficientsbutcapturedirectionalfeaturesoftheimage.However,theexistingbandlettransformhassomelimitations.Firstly,somecoefficientsmaynotberelevanttoimagefeatures,andthuscanberemovedtoreducethecomputationalcost.Secondly,theexistingtransformisnotfullyoptimizedfordirection,whichleadstoredundantcalculations.
Method:
Theproposed2ndgenerationbandlettransformisoptimizedfordirectionbyselectingasetofdirectionsthataremostrelevanttoimagefeatures.Theselectionofdirectionsisdoneusinggradient-basedoptimizationtechniques,wherethegradientoftheimageisusedtodeterminethedirections.Thisleadstoareductioninthenumberofcalculationsrequiredforthetransform,whilepreservingtheimportantimagefeatures.Theselectionofdirectionsisbasedontheimagegradient,whichprovidesalocalmeasureofimagestructure.Thegradientisfirstcomputed,andthentheprincipaldirectionsareextractedusingaeigenvectoranalysis.
Theproposedtransformisbasedonadirection-adaptivebandletbasis,whichisasetofbasisfunctionsthatareoptimizedfordirection.Thedirection-adaptivebasisprovidesamoreefficientrepresentationoftheimagefeatures,whichleadstoareductioninthenumberofbasisfunctionsrequiredforthetransform.Thedirection-adaptivebasisfunctionsareobtainedbyprojectingasetofpre-definedbasisfunctionsontotheselecteddirections.
