Abstract:
Thispaperaimstoexploretheapplicationofschema-basedtheoryinJapaneselisteninginstructionforEnglishmajors.Schematheoryemphasizestheroleofbackgroundknowledgeandpriorexperiencesincomprehensionandlearning.Withthehelpofschema-basedactivities,Englishmajorscanenhancetheirlisteningskillsbyactivatingtheirexistingknowledgeanddevelopingnewschemas.Thispaperdiscussesthetheoreticalfoundationsofschematheory,itsapplicationinJapaneselisteninginstruction,andthepotentialbenefitsforEnglishmajors.Byincorporatingschema-basedactivitiesintotheteachingprocess,instructorscancreateamoreengagingandeffectivelearningenvironmentforEnglishmajors'Japaneselisteningskillsdevelopment.
1.Introduction:
JapaneselisteningcomprehensionisanessentialskillforEnglishmajorswhowishtopursuecareersrelatedtoJapaneselanguageorculture.However,manyEnglishmajorsfacechallengesinimprovingtheirlisteningskillsduetounfamiliaritywithJapaneseculturalcontextsandlackofpractice.Schematheoryprovidesatheoreticalframeworkforenhancinglisteningcomprehensionbyactivatingpriorknowledgeandcreatingmentalstructuresforcomprehension.
2.TheoreticalFoundationsofSchemaTheory:
Schematheory,introducedbyBartlett(1932)andrefinedbyAndersonandPearson(1984),suggeststhatindividuals'priorknowledgeandexperiencesshapetheirunderstandingofnewinformation.Schemasarementalframeworksthathelpindividualsorganizeandinterpretinformation.Inthecontextoflanguagelearning,learnersactivateexistingschemasrelatedtoaparticulartopictocomprehendandrememberlinguisticinput.
3.ApplicationofSchema-basedTheoryinJapaneseListeningInstruction:
a)Pre-ListeningPhase:BeforelisteningtoaJapaneseaudioclip,Englishmajorscanengageinpre-listeningactivities,suchasbrainstormingrelatedvocabulary,predictingthecontent,anddiscussingtheirpriorknowledgeaboutthetopic.Theseactivitieshelpactivaterelevantschemasandpreparelearnersforeffectivelistening.
