Englishisoneofthemostwidelyspokenlanguagesworldwide,anditisanofficiallanguageinseveralcountries,includingSingapore,Canada,andAustralia.Asaresult,Englishlanguageproficiencyisvitalintheglobaleconomyandininternationalcommunication.InChina,Englishistaughtasaforeignlanguagefromprimaryschoolthroughtouniversity.EnglishmajorsstudyEnglishlinguistics,literature,culture,andlanguageacquisitiontheory,amongothersubjects.OneimportantaspectofstudyingEnglishasanacademicdisciplineisvocabularyacquisition.ThispaperwillexplorehowChineseEnglishmajorstudentsacquirevocabulary,howintentionalvocabularylearningcomparestoincidentalvocabularylearning,andtheroleofvocabularyinincreasinglanguageproficiency.
FactorsaffectingvocabularyacquisitionforChineseEnglishmajors
Thevocabularyofalanguageisacrucialcomponentoflanguageproficiency,affectingreadingcomprehension,writingskills,andspeakingfluency.ChineseEnglishmajorstudentsencounterdifficultiesacquiringEnglishvocabularyforvariousreasons.Thesereasonsincludethelackofexposuretoauthenticlanguage,limitedmemorizationtechniques,limitedopportunitiesforpractice,andalackofunderstandingofhowtolearnnewvocabulary.SeveralstudieshaveshownthatChinesestudentsareoftenreluctanttoengagewithnativespeakersforfearofmakingmistakesorbeingjudged(Lin,2012);Thislimitedexposureaffectstheirabilitytoacquirevocabularythroughcontextualclues.Therefore,thefollowingdiscussionsaimtoexplorehowChineseEnglishmajorsacquiretheirvocabulary,payingattentiontointentionalvocabularylearningandincidentalvocabularylearning.
