Introduction:
TheestablishmentofconstitutionalgovernanceintheearlyRepublicaneraofChinamarkedacrucialtransitionfromimperialruletoademocraticsystem.However,thedemocraticexperimentduringthisperiodwasnotwithoutitschallenges.ThispaperaimstoexplorethereasonsbehindthedemocraticdilemmasfacedinearlyRepublicanChina,includingthelackofpoliticalorganization,regionaldivisions,weakinstitutionalfoundations,andexternalpressures.Byexaminingthesefactors,wecangaininsightintothedifficultiesandcomplexitiesofdemocraticdevelopmentinChina.
I.LackofPoliticalOrganization:
Oneofthemainobstaclestodemocraticconsolidationduringthisperiodwasthelackofwell-organizedpoliticalparties.UnliketheestablishedpartysystemsinWesterndemocracies,theearlyRepublicaneraofChinawascharacterizedbyafragmentedpoliticallandscape.Theabsenceofstrongpoliticalpartieshinderedtheformationofstablegovernments,andinstead,powerstrugglesoftenprevailed.Internalpowerstruggles,oftenmotivatedbypersonalambitionsandregionalinterests,weakenedthedemocraticprocessandledtogovernanceinstability.
II.RegionalDivisions:
China'svastanddiverseterritoryposedsignificantchallengestodemocraticgovernanceintheearlyRepublicanera.Thecountryhadlong-standingregionaldivisions,bothculturalandpolitical,whichhinderedthedevelopmentofaunifiednationalidentity.Regionalfactionsandwarlordscompetedforcontrol,underminingthecentralgovernment'sauthorityandpreventingtheestablishmentofastrongdemocraticsystem.Politicaldecision-makingoftenprioritizedregionalinterestsovernationalones,furtherexacerbatingthedemocraticdilemma.
III.WeakInstitutionalFoundations:
