Withtheincreasingglobalizationoftheworldtoday,Englishlanguageproficiencyhasbecomeanimportantfactorinastudent'sacademicandprofessionalsuccess.TheEnglishproficiencytestforEnglishmajorsinChina,knownastheCollegeEnglishTest(CET),hasbeendesignedtoevaluatestudents'abilitiestousetheEnglishlanguageforacademicandprofessionalpurposes.TheCET-4,aimedatintermediate-levelEnglishproficiency,isarequirementforgraduationforEnglishmajorsatmanyuniversitiesinChina,includingYulinNormalUniversity.Therefore,theCET-4examhasasignificantimpactontheteachingandlearningofEnglishatYulinNormalUniversity.ThispaperaimstoexploretheimpactofCET-4ontheteachingandlearningofEnglishatYulinNormalUniversity.
Firstly,CET-4hasapositiveimpactonthequalityofEnglishlanguageeducationatYulinNormalUniversity.Theexamrequiresthatstudentshaveagoodcommandofgrammar,vocabulary,andreadingcomprehensionskills,whichencouragesstudentstofocusonlanguagebasics.Teachersinthisfieldtendtoemphasizethedevelopmentofthespeakingandlisteningskillsaswell.Therefore,theCET-4examactsasaguideandstandardforEnglishteachingatYulinNormalUniversity.EnglishmajorsatYulinNormalUniversitygetacomprehensiveandsystematictraininginreading,writing,speaking,andlisteningthroughtheCET-4preparatorycourses.TheCET-4examalsopushesteacherstodesignandimplementhigh-qualityteachingmethodsandmaterials.ThisenhancestheoveralllearningexperienceforstudentsandmakesthemmoreproficientinEnglish.
