Introduction:
AsEnglishhasbecomeagloballanguage,learningtheEnglishlanguagehasbecomeincreasinglyimportantinmanycountries,includingChina.EnglishmajorsinuniversitiesinChinahavetolearnnotonlyEnglishgrammarandvocabularybutalsotheEnglishpronunciation.However,asEnglishisnotthenativelanguageofChinesepeople,EnglishmajorsoftenstrugglewithEnglishpronunciation,whichaffectstheircommunicationabilityinEnglish.Therefore,thisstudyaimstoinvestigatethechallengesthatEnglishmajorsinChinafacewhenlearningEnglishpronunciationandprovideeffectivestrategiestoovercomethem.
ChallengesofEnglishPronunciationforEnglishMajorsinChina:
1.Phonemicawareness:PhonemicawarenessisanessentialskillforlearningEnglishpronunciation.Itreferstotheabilitytoidentify,isolate,andmanipulateindividualsoundsinwords.However,ChinesestudentsareusedtothesyllabicstructureoftheChineselanguage,whichdiffersfromthephonemicstructureofEnglish,leadingtodifficultiesinphonemicawareness.
2.Toneandintonation:Chineseisatonallanguage,andtoneplaysanessentialroleinChinesecommunication.However,thetoneinEnglishisdifferentfromthatinChinese,whichcauseschallengestoChinesestudentsinspokenEnglish.Additionally,Englishisalanguagewithvariousintonations,whichChinesestudentsoftenfailtouseappropriately.
3.Consonantandvowelsounds:Englishhasabout44phonemes,including20vowelsand25consonants,whileMandarinChinesehasonlyaround37orfewerphonemes.Thus,EnglishhasmanymoresoundsthanChinese,leadingtodifficultyinproducinganddistinguishingconsonantandvowelsounds.
StrategiestoImproveEnglishPronunciationforEnglishMajorsinChina:
1.Usephoneticsymbols:PhoneticsymbolsareausefultoolforEnglishmajorstolearnEnglishpronunciation.TheycanbeusedtorepresenttheindividualsoundsofEnglish,whichcanhelpChinesestudentstoproduceandidentifyEnglishsoundsappropriately.
