Introduction
Englishisadynamicandevolvinglanguagethatissubjecttoconstantchange,andoneofthemostfundamentalwaysinwhichitchangesisthroughtheuseofinsertionsorinterjections.Aninsertionisawordorphrasethatisinsertedintoasentenceordiscourseforemphasis,clarification,oremotionalexpression.Itcanbeasinglewordsuchas'well'oranentirephrasesuchas'youknowwhatImean.'DespitethewidespreaduseofinsertionsinEnglish,thereisstillmuchthatisnotwellunderstoodabouttheirfunctionandeffectondiscourse.ThispaperwillexploretheroleofEnglishinsertionsindiscourse,focusingontheirrelationshiptothediscoursecontextandtheirfunctioninconveyingmeaning.
Background
WhileinsertionsareaubiquitousfeatureofEnglish,researchershavenotalwayspaidmuchattentiontothem.Inrecentyears,however,therehasbeengrowinginterestinthestudyofinsertionsandtheirroleindiscourse.Oneofthekeyquestionsthatresearchershavebeenaddressingistheextenttowhichinsertionsarecontext-dependent.Someresearchersarguethatinsertionsarerelativelyindependentofcontextandthattheyperformrelativelyfixedfunctions,regardlessofthesurroundingdiscourse.Othersarguethatinsertionsarehighlycontext-dependentandthattheirfunctionistosignalchangesinthespeaker'sattitudeorperspective.
Methodology
Toinvestigatetherelationshipbetweeninsertionsandthediscoursecontext,thisstudywillanalyzeacorpusofspokenEnglishthatincludesavarietyofdifferentcontextsandspeechsituations.Thecorpuswillbedrawnfromnaturallyoccurringconversationaldata,includingrecordingsofinterviews,discussions,anddebates.Theanalysiswillfocusontwomainquestions:(1)howdoinsertionsvarydependingonthediscoursecontext?And(2)whatisthefunctionofinsertionsinconveyingmeaningandshapingdiscourse?
Results
Theanalysisofthecorpussuggeststhatinsertionsareindeedhighlycontext-dependentandthattheirfunctionistosignalchangesinthespeaker'sattitudeorperspective.Forexample,insertionssuchas'well'and'Imean'areoftenusedtoindicatethatthespeakerisabouttointroduceanewtopicormakeanewpoint.Similarly,insertionssuchas'youknow'and'like'areoftenusedt
