Introduction:
Theabilitytousecorrectverbformsinalanguageiscrucialforeffectivecommunication.IntheacquisitionofEnglishasasecondlanguage,themasteryofthepasttenseisconsideredoneofthemostchallengingaspectsfornon-nativespeakers,especiallyforthosewhosefirstlanguagehasadifferentverbsystem.Inthispaper,wewilldiscusshowthetwoapproaches,recastingandrepetition,affecttheacquisitionofEnglishpasttensebynon-Englishmajorsincollege.
Recasting:
Recastingreferstoatechniqueofcorrectingalearners’grammaticallyincorrectsentencewithoutdirectlypointingouttheerror.Instead,theteacherorafluentspeakerofthelanguagerephrasesthesentenceinagrammaticallycorrectway,sothatthelearnercanhearthecorrectform.Recastingisoftenusedinconversationandisconsideredtobeamorenaturalwayofcorrectinggrammaticalerrorswithoutmakingthelearnerfeelembarrassedorself-conscious.
Studiesshowthatrecastingisaneffectivetechniqueforimprovinglearners'useofpasttensesinEnglish.Ithelpslearnerstonoticethedifferencebetweenincorrectandcorrectformsofthepasttenseandtointernalizethecorrectformthroughrepetition.InastudyconductedbyLysterandRanta(1997),itwasfoundthatstudentswhoreceivedrecastshadsignificantlymoreimprovementintheiruseofpasttensecomparedtothosewhoreceivedexplicitcorrectionandthosewhoreceivednofeedbackatall.
However,recastingmaynotbesuitableforalllearners.LearnerswhoarenotproficientinEnglishmaynotbeabletonoticethedifferencebetweenthecorrectandincorrectformsofpasttense.Moreover,learnerswhoarenotusedtoconversationalfeedbackmaynotbecomfortablewiththisapproach.
Repetition:
RepetitionisanothertechniqueusedtoimprovetheuseofpasttenseinEnglish.Inthisapproach,learnersaregivenalistofirregularverbstomemorize.Theyarethenaskedtousetheseverbsinvarioussentencessothattheycanpracticeformingthepasttensecorrectly.Thiscanbedonethroughdrills,exercises,orgames.
ResearchhasshownthatrepetitionisaneffectivewaytohelplearnersimprovetheiruseofirregularpasttenseverbsinEnglish.InastudyconductedbyChiangandDunkel(2010),itwasfoundthatlearn
