CooperativeLearningandVocabularyAcquisitioninHighSchoolEnglishEducation
Introduction
VocabularyacquisitioniscrucialtothedevelopmentofEnglishlanguageproficiencyforhighschoolstudents.Inordertoacquireandmasteralargenumberofwords,studentsmusthaveeffectivelearningstrategiesthatcomplementtheirindividualabilities.Cooperativelearning,asawell-establishedteachingapproach,hasbeendemonstratedtobeausefulmethodofpromotinglearningandinvolvementamonghighschoollearners.ThispaperaimstoexploretheeffectivenessofcooperativelearninginEnglishvocabularyacquisitioninhighschool.
TheoreticalFramework
Cooperativelearningisgroundedinseveraltheories,includingthesocialinterdependencetheory,thecognitiveelaborationtheory,andthemotivationaltheory(Johnson,Johnson,&Smith,1991).Thesetheoriescenteraroundthenotionthatourlearningexperiencesareamplifiedwhenweinteractwithothers.Incooperativelearning,studentsworktogetherinsmallgroupstocompleteasharedtask.Eachmemberofthegroupisresponsibleforcontributingtothesuccessofthegroup,whichpromotesmutualaccountability,peersupport,andsharedlearningexperiences.
Vocabularyacquisitionhasbeenshowntobemosteffectivewhenitiscontextualizedwithinmeaningfulandmemorableinteractions(Nation,2001).Essentially,studentsmustbeactivelyengagedinacquiringnewvocabularyusingcontextualizedandmeaningfulstrategies.Cooperativelearningcanprovideanenrichinglearningenvironmentbyprovidingopportunitiesforstudentstointeractwithoneanotherandtomakesharedmeaningoutofnewwords.
Methods
Thepresentstudyinvestigatedtherelationshipbetweencooperativelearningandvocabularyacquisitioninhighschool.Aheterogeneoussampleof100highschoolstudentsfromapublicschoolintheUnitedStateswasrecruitedforthestudy.Participantswererandomlyassignedtoeitheranexperimentalgroup(n=50)oracontrolgroup(n=50).Thecontrolgroupreceivedtraditionalclassroominstruction,whiletheexperimentalgroupreceivedcooperativelearningactivitiesinsmallgroups.
