Introduction
Withtherapiddevelopmentofdigitaltechnologiesandthewidespreadavailabilityoflarge-scalecorpora,corpus-drivenapproacheshavebecomeincreasinglypopularinlanguagelearningandteaching.Oneofthemostimportantapplicationsofcorpus-drivenapproachesistheautomaticacquisitionoflexicalknowledge.Inrecentyears,varioustechniqueshavebeenproposedtoextractandcalculatelexicalstatisticsfromlargecorpora,andthesestatisticalmodelshavebeenshowntobeefficientinmodelingdifferentaspectsoflexicalknowledge.Inthispaper,wefocusontheempiricalresearchofcorpus-drivenvocabularylearningandinvestigatethepotentialofusingcorpus-drivenapproachestoenhancevocabularyacquisition.
Corpus-drivenvocabularylearning
Corpus-drivenvocabularylearningreferstotheprocessofacquiringvocabularyknowledgethroughtheexaminationandanalysisoflargecorpora.Thebasicideaofcorpus-drivenvocabularylearningisthatlearnerscaninferthemeaningandusageofwordsthroughtheirdistributionalpatternsinacorpus.Corpus-drivenapproachescanhelplearnersidentifyhowwordsareusedincontextandhowlexicalitemsarerelatedtoeachotherinaparticularlanguagesystem.Theseapproachescanalsobeusedtoidentifythemostfrequentandusefullexicalitems,therebyfacilitatingvocabularyacquisition.
Empiricalresearchoncorpus-drivenvocabularylearning
Anumberofempiricalstudieshaveexploredtheeffectivenessofcorpus-drivenapproachesforvocabularylearning.Forexample,HsuandHuang(2011)investigatedtheeffectivenessofusingcorpus-basedvocabularyteachinginahighschoolcontextinTaiwan.Theirresultsshowedthatthecorpus-basedapproachwasmoreeffectivethantraditionaltextbook-basedteachingintermsofvocabularyacquisitionandretention.Similarly,MearaandBuxton(2008)foundthatacorpus-informedapproachtovocabularyteachingwasmoreeffectivethanatraditionaltextbook-basedprogramforadvancedEnglishlanguagelearnersinauniversitysetting.Thesestudiesindicatethatcorpus-drivenapproachescanbeeffectiveinfacilitatinglexicalacquisition,especiallyforadvancedlearnerswhoneedtoacquirealargeamountofspecializedvocabulary.
