Withtheincreasingimportanceofglobalization,Englishhasbecomeauniversallanguage.Therefore,manystudentshavechosentheEnglishmajortoimprovetheirlanguageproficiencyandmeetthedemandofthefuturejobmarket.Asoneoftheessentialcomponentsoflanguagelearning,vocabularyacquisitionplaysavitalroleinEnglishlanguageproficiency.Thus,learningpropervocabularylearningstrategiesiscrucialforEnglishmajorstudents.
ThisresearchaimstoexploretheeffectivestrategiesofvocabularylearningandapplythemtoEnglishteaching.Throughasurveyof100Englishmajorstudents,thefollowingstrategiesofvocabularylearningwerefoundout:
1.ContextualLearningStrategy:Thisstrategyisusedtoextractmeaningfromthecontextofawordandunderstandtheword'susageinasentence.Thistechniqueisprevalentandeffectiveasithelpsthelearnertoquicklyunderstandthewordanditsdifferentconnotations.
2.MemorizationStrategy:Thisstrategyisthemoststraightforwardtechniqueinvocabularylearning.Itinvolvesthelearnerwritingoutthewordanditsmeaningseveraltimestomemorizethewordthoroughly.Thetechniquemayseemtedious,butitisaveryefficientwaytolearnvocabulary.
3.VisualLearningStrategy:Thisstrategyinvolvestheuseofpictures,diagrams,andvideostosimplifyacomplexword’smeaning.ThistechniqueisusefulforEnglishmajorstudentswhohavetroubleunderstandingcertainwords'complexities.
4.AssociationStrategy:Thisstrategyinvolvesassociatinganewwordwithanalreadyknownwordorphrase.Thistechniqueisusefulasithelpswithlong-termretentionofvocabulary.
5.UseStrategy:Thisstrategyinvolvesusingnewvocabularylearnedineverydayconversations,writing,orreading.Thistechniqueisapowerfulwaytopracticeandinternalizevocabularylearnedovertime.
