Introduction
WiththeincreasingimportanceofEnglishasaninternationallanguage,theabilitytoacquireandeffectivelyuseEnglishvocabularyhasbecomemorecrucialthaneverbefore.Asaresult,thestudyofEnglishvocabularyacquisitionstrategieshasgarneredsignificantattentionfromeducators,researchers,andlearnersalike.Inthispaper,wewillexplorethelatestresearchonEnglishvocabularyacquisitionandinvestigatethemosteffectivestrategiesforlearningandrememberingnewwords.
LiteratureReview
TheeffectiveacquisitionofEnglishvocabularyentailsvariouscognitiveandmetacognitiveprocesses.Researchershaveidentifiedseveralstrategiesthatfacilitatevocabularyacquisition,includingmnemonicdevices,semanticmapping,contextualguessing,anduseofcognatesandcollocations.Mnemonicdevicesarememoryaidssuchasacronyms,songs,rhymes,andvisualizationtechniquesthathelplearnersremembernewwords.Semanticmappinginvolvescreatingavisualrepresentationofword-relationshipsandassociations.Contextualguessingisastrategyofusingcontextualcluestoinferthemeaningsofunfamiliarwords.Cognatesandcollocationsarewordsthatshareasimilarityinspellingorsoundorappeartogetherinanaturalcontext.Usingthesestrategiescanenhancethelearners’abilitytoretainandrecallthewordstheylearn.
Moreover,researchsuggeststhatsometechniquesaremoresuitableforsomelearnersthanothers.Forinstance,learnerswhopreferamorestructuredlearningapproachmaybenefitfrompracticingwithwordlistsorflashcards,whileotherlearnersmaypreferamorenaturallearningexperience,likereadingextensively,listeningtospokenEnglish,orengaginginconversationwithnativespeakers.Still,othersmaybenefitfromacombinationofthesestrategies.
Methodology
ToinvestigatethemosteffectiveEnglishvocabularyacquisitionstrategies,weanalyzedarangeofresearchstudiesconductedbetween2015and2021.Thestudiesweresourcedviaelectronicdatabasesearchesofacademicliterature,includingGoogleScholar,ERIC,andJSTOR.Wefocusedonstudiesthatexaminetheeffectivenessofvocabularyacquisitionstrategiesamongnon-nativespeakersofEnglish.
