Introduction
EnglishvocabularyisoneofthemostcrucialaspectsoflearningEnglishfornon-nativespeakers,especiallyforcollegestudents.Theacquisitionofvocabularyisessentialforeffectivecommunicationandacademicsuccess.However,wordsmemorizationisquitechallengingasstudentsneedtolearnandretainavastnumberofwords.Therefore,findingeffectivestrategiestoenhancewordretentionisessentialforstudents'academicsuccess.Thisstudyaimedtoinvestigatetheeffectivenessofmemorystrategiesonundergraduatestudents'vocabularymemoryretention.
Methodology
Aquasi-experimentaldesignwasappliedforthisresearch.60undergraduatestudentsinauniversityinChinawererecruitedasparticipantsforthisstudy.Theywererandomlydividedintothreegroups,eachconsistingof20participants.Thefirstgroupreceivedvisualizationtraining,thesecondgroupreceivedrepetitionandassociationtraining,andthethirdcontrolgroupdidnotreceiveanytraining.
Allparticipantswerepresentedwithalistof40Englishwordstomemorize.Aftera15-minutestudyperiod,participantsweregivenarecalltest.Afteroneweek,thesametestwasadministeredtoallparticipantstoassesstheirlong-termretention.
Results
Theresultsofthisstudyindicatedthatbothvisualizationandrepetitionandassociationtrainingwereeffectiveinimprovingstudents'wordretention.Thevisualizationgroupscoredthehighestamongthethreegroupsforboththeimmediateandlong-termrecalltests.Therepetitionandassociationgroupalsoperformedbetterthanthecontrolgroup.However,thecontrolgroupshowedtheweakestperformanceinbothtests.
Discussion
Theresultsofthisstudyindicatedthatcooperationofwordmemorizationwithmemorystrategiescansignificantlyenhancememoryretention.Visualizationandrepetitionandassociationwereeffectivetechniquesforimprovingvocabularyretention.Itisnotsurprisingthatthevisualizationgroupscoredthehighestasvisualizationhasbeenshowntobeapotentmnemonictechnique.Ithasbeensuggestedthatvisualizationinvolvesawiderangeofcognitiveprocessesthatencouragedeeperprocessingofinformation,whichleadstobetterretention.Therefore,incorporatingasma
