CMOS与BIOS分析
Introduction
Intheworldofcomputers,therearetwomajortermsthatareusedfrequently,BIOSandCMOS.Thesetwotermsmayseemsimilarbuttheyarecompletelydifferentfromeachother.BIOSstandsforBasicInputOutputSystemwhileCMOSstandsforComplementaryMetalOxideSemiconductor.ThepurposeofthispaperistoanalyzethedifferencesbetweenBIOSandCMOSandhowtheyworktogethertomakeyourcomputerrun.
WhatisBIOS?
TheBIOSisasmallsoftwareprogramthatispre-installedonyourcomputer'smotherboard.Itisresponsibleforcontrollingbasicinputandoutputoperations.TheBIOSisthefirstsoftwareprogramthatrunswhenyourcomputeristurnedon.Itdetectsandinitializesallthehardwarecomponentsofyourcomputer,suchastheharddrive,memory,andprocessor.OncetheBIOShascompleteditsjob,ithandsoverthecontroltotheoperatingsystem,whichthentakesoverthemanagementofthehardware.
HowdoesBIOSwork?
TheBIOSisresponsibleforperformingaPower-OnSelf-Test(POST)whichchecksthebasicfunctionalityofthehardwarecomponentsofyourcomputer.Ifanyissuesaredetectedduringthistest,theBIOSwillemitaseriesofbeepstoalerttheuser.TheBIOSalsocontrolsthehardwareclockofyourcomputerwhichisusedtokeeptrackofthedateandtime.Additionally,theBIOSstoresthesettingsforthecomputer'shardwareconfigurationandthesesettingsareaccessedthroughtheBIOSSetupUtility.
WhatisCMOS?
CMOSstandsforComplementaryMetalOxideSemiconductor,anditisthetechnologyusedtoimplementtheBIOSchip.TheCMOSchipisthepartofthemotherboardthatstorestheBIOSsettings.UnliketheBIOS,whichisaprogram,theCMOSisapieceofhardwarethatiscapableofstoringdataevenwhenthepoweristurnedoff.ThisiswhytheCMOSisusedtostorethesettingsforthemotherboardevenwhenthecomputeristurnedoff.
HowdoesCMOSwork?
TheCMOSchiputilizesaspecialtypeofRAMcalledNon-VolatileRAM(NVRAM)whichcanstoredataevenwhenthepowertothechipisturnedoff.TheCMOSchipispoweredbyasmallbattery,whichisusuallyaCR2032lithiumcoincell.ThisbatteryensuresthattheCMOSchipstayspoweredevenwhenthecomputeristurnedoff.
TheCMOSisresponsibleforstoringtheBIOSsettings.ThesesettingscanbeaccessedthroughtheBIOSSetupUtility.
