Abstract:
AsField-ProgrammableGateArray(FPGA)technologyiswidelyusedinvariousapplications,itisessentialtoanalyzetheimpactofdifferentdesignchoicesonFPGAareaanddelay.ThispaperpresentsatheoreticalanalysisoftheimpactofLook-UpTable(LUT)sizeonFPGAareaanddelay.Firstly,thebasicarchitectureofanFPGAisintroduced.Then,theworkingprincipleoftheLUTisexplained.Afterthat,theimpactofLUTsizeonFPGAareaanddelayisanalyzedindetail.Finally,theconclusionandfutureworkaregiven.
Introduction:
Field-ProgrammableGateArrays(FPGAs)aresemiconductordevicesthatcanbeprogrammedaftermanufacturing.FPGAsarewidelyusedinvariousapplicationssuchasembeddedsystems,digitalsignalprocessing,andhigh-performancecomputing.DuetothehighflexibilityandconfigurabilityofFPGAs,designerscanimplementcomplexdigitalcircuitsandsystemsusingFPGAtechnology.However,FPGAdesignisachallengingtaskduetoitshardwarearchitectureanddesignrequirements.OneofthecriticaldesignchoicesinFPGAdesignisthesizeoftheLook-UpTable(LUT).Inthispaper,wepresentatheoreticalanalysisoftheimpactofLUTsizeonFPGAareaanddelay.
BasicArchitectureofFPGA:
AnFPGAconsistsofamatrixofconfigurablelogicblocks(CLBs)connectedbyprogrammableinterconnects.EachCLBincludesmultiplecomponentssuchasLUTs,flip-flops,andmultiplexers.TheCLBscanbeprogrammedtoimplementdifferentdigitalcircuitsandsystems.TheinterconnectsbetweenCLBsprovideaflexibleroutingarchitecturethatallowsfastandefficientcommunicationbetweendifferentpartsofthedesign.TheoverallperformanceofanFPGAdesigndependsonthenumberandsizeofCLBs,theconfigurationofinterconnects,andthesizeofLUTs.
WorkingPrincipleofLUT:
ALook-UpTable(LUT)isasmallmemorycomponentthatcanstoreatruthtableofalogicfunction.AtypicalLUTcontainstwoinputsandoneoutput.TheinputstotheLUTsarethesignalsfromtheinputpinsortheoutputsofothercomponents.TheLUTstoresatruthtablethatmapstheinputcombinationtotheoutputvalueforaspecificlogicfunction.TheoutputoftheLUTcanbeusedasaninputtoothercompon
