Introduction
Location-basedservices(LBS)havebecomeanintegralpartofthemobilecommunicationworld,withavastarrayofapplications.AccuratelocationdeterminationisanessentialrequirementforLBS,especiallyinmission-criticalapplications,suchasemergencyandrescueoperations.Inthispaper,weproposealocationdeterminationmethodbasedonthedifferenceinfieldstrengthinaGlobalSystemforMobileCommunications(GSM)network.Theproposedmethodusestriangulationtechniquestodeterminethelocationofamobilestation.
GSMNetworkArchitecture
TheGSMnetworkarchitectureconsistsofthreemaincomponents:themobilestation(MS),thebasetransceiverstation(BTS),andthemobileswitchingcenter(MSC).TheMSisamobilephoneordevicethatcommunicateswiththeBTStomakeorreceivecalls.TheBTSisaradiobasestationthatservesthemobilestationsinaparticulararea,alsoknownasacell.TheMSCisacentralswitchingunitthatconnectstheBTSstothepublicswitchedtelephonenetwork(PSTN)ortheinternet.
LocationdeterminationinaGSMnetworkisachievedbymeasuringthesignalstrengthoftheMSfromatleastthreedifferentBTSs.Thesignalstrengthismeasuredintermsofthereceivedsignalstrengthindication(RSSI),whichisanindicationofthepowerlevelofthesignalreceivedbytheMSfromtheBTS.TheRSSIprovidesanapproximatedistanceestimatebetweentheMSandtheBTSbasedontheinversesquarelaw.
ProposedLocationDeterminationMethod
TheproposedlocationdeterminationmethodusesthesignalstrengthmeasurementsfromthreedifferentBTSstodeterminethelocationofthemobilestation.ThemethodinvolvesmeasuringthesignalstrengthfromeachBTSandcalculatingthedifferenceinsignalstrengthbetweeneachpairofBTSs.ThedifferenceinsignalstrengthiscalculatedastheabsolutevalueofthedifferencebetweentheRSSIfromthetwoBTSs.
AssumingthatthemobilestationislocatedatapointP(x,y),thesignalstrengthmeasurementsfromthethreeBTSsA,B,andCcanberepresentedasfollows:
