Introduction
Withtheincreasingglobalizationoftradeandindustry,theimportanceofprofessionalEnglishlanguageskillscannotbeoveremphasized.ProfessionalEnglishteachinghasbeenidentifiedasacriticalareathatrequiresreforminthe21stcentury,asmoreprofessionalsrequirespecializedvocabularyandcommunicationskillstocommunicateeffectivelyininternationalbusinesssettings.ThisstudyseekstoexploretheneedforprofessionalEnglishteachingreformandthemethodsthatcanbeemployedtoimprovethequalityofprofessionalEnglishlanguageinstruction.
Background
Inthepast,manylanguageprogramsfocusedonteachingbasiceverydaycommunicationskills,withlittleregardforthespecificneedsofprofessionalswhooperateindiverseindustries.Theseprogramsfailedtoequiplearnerswiththenecessaryvocabularyandtechnicallanguageneededtocommunicateeffectivelyinprofessionalcontexts,limitingtheirabilitytomakeapositiveimpactintheirchosenfields.Additionally,thetraditionallecture-and-testformatusedinprofessionalEnglishlanguageteachingwasnoteffectiveinpromotingcommunicationskillsandoftenresultedinstudentswhocouldpassexamsbutcouldnotcommunicateeffectivelyinEnglish.
Withtheadventofonlineresourcesandtechnologicaladvancements,thereisanopportunityforeducatorstotransformlanguageinstructionbyintegratingtechnologytoprovidemoredynamic,learner-centredandinteractiveactivities,therebyenhancingtheefficiencyandeffectivenessofEnglishlanguageinstruction.
Methods
ApreliminaryexplorationofprofessionalEnglishlanguageteachingreformsuggeststhatseveralapproachescanbeemployedtoimprovethequalityofinstruction.
Firstly,thereshouldbeashiftfromthelecture-and-testformattomoreengaging,interactiveandcommunicativeapproachesthatencouragestudentstoparticipateactivelyinthelearningprocess.Instructorsshouldstrivetoadoptcommunicativemethodologiesthatemphasizepracticallanguageusageinreal-lifesituations.
