Introduction
Orionisasatellite-basedpositioningsystemthatusesGPStechnologytoprovideaccuratelocationinformationtousersaroundtheworld.Thesystemprovidesarangeofservices,includinglocationtracking,navigation,andtimingservices.A-GPS(AssistedGPS)isatechnologythatisdesignedtoenhancetheaccuracyandspeedofGPSpositioningbyusingadditionaldatafromthecellularnetworktocomplementthesignalsfromGPSsatellites.Inthispaper,wewilldiscussthedesignofacommunicationsoftwarebasedonOrion'sA-GPSsystem.
DesignoftheA-GPSSystem
TheA-GPSsystemworksbyusingadditionaldatafromthecellularnetworktoimprovetheaccuracyandspeedofpositioning.Whenadeviceinitiatesarequestforlocationdata,theA-GPSsystemusesthecellularnetworktodownloaddataaboutthelocationofnearbyGPSsatellites,aswellasinformationaboutthedevice'scurrentlocationandtime.Thisdataisusedbythedevicetocalculateitspositionandprovideaccuratelocationinformationtotheuser.
TheA-GPSsystemreliesonatwo-waycommunicationprocessbetweenthedeviceandthecellularnetwork.Thedevicesendsarequestforlocationdatatothenetwork,andthenetworkrespondswiththenecessarydata.Thiscommunicationprocessrequiresspecializedsoftwarethatcansendandreceivedatabetweenthedeviceandthenetwork.
DesignoftheCommunicationSoftware
ThecommunicationsoftwarefortheA-GPSsystemisdesignedtobesimpleandefficient.ThesoftwareisdesignedtorunonthedeviceandcommunicatewiththecellularnetworktoretrievethenecessarydatafortheA-GPSsystem.Thesoftwareisresponsibleformanagingthecommunicationprocesswiththenetwork,aswellasprocessingthedatathatisreceivedfromthenetwork.
Thecommunicationsoftwareisdesignedusingaclient-serverarchitecture.Thedeviceactsastheclient,andthecellularnetworkactsastheserver.Theclientsendsarequesttotheserver,andtheserversendsaresponsebacktotheclient.Toensureefficientcommunication,thesoftwareusesalightweightprotocolthatminimizestheamountofdatathatissentoverthenetwork.
Thesoftwareisdesignedtobemodularandflexible.Thisallowsthesoftwaretobeeasilyadaptedfordifferentdevicesandnetworks.Thesoftwarei
