Introduction
Thedevelopmentofnuclear-poweredsubmarineshasbeenanimportantaspectofmilitarystrategyforseveralcountries,includingtheUnitedKingdom.TheUnitedKingdomcurrentlyoperatesanageingfleetoffourVanguard-classnuclear-poweredsubmarines,whichareduetobereplacedinthecomingyearswithanewclassofsubmarines.Thefuturesubmarineswillbeequippedwithnewandadvancednuclearpropulsionsystemsthatareexpectedtoprovidegreaterefficiency,reliability,andoperationalflexibility.ThispaperexploresthenuclearpropulsionsystemsthatarebeingdevelopedfortheUK'sfuturesubmarines.
Background
ThecurrentVanguard-classsubmarinesarepoweredbyRolls-RoycePWR2pressurizedwaterreactors,whichhavebeeninservicesincethe1990s.ThePWR2reactorsprovidethesubmarineswithnuclearpower,whichisusedtodrivethepropulsionsystem.Thesubmarinescanremainsubmergedforseveralmonthsatatimeandcantravelatspeedsofupto25knots.However,thePWR2reactorsarelimitedintermsofperformanceandoperationalflexibility.Therefore,theUKMinistryofDefencehasinitiatedaprogrammetodevelopanewclassofsubmarinesthatwillbeequippedwithnext-generationnuclearpropulsionsystems.
TheFutureSubmarineProgramme(FSP)aimstodeliverfournuclear-poweredsubmarines,whichwillbedesignedtoprovideimprovedstealth,endurance,andoperationalflexibility.Thesubmarineswillbeequippedwithnewpropulsionsystemsthatwillmakeuseofadvancedtechnologiestoenhanceperformancewhilereducingtheenvironmentalimpact.TheUKgovernmenthascommitted£25bntotheFSP,whichisoneofthelargestandmostcomplexdefenceprogrammesintheworld.
NuclearPropulsionSystems
TheUKgovernmenthasnotyetdisclosedthedetailsofthenuclearpropulsionsystemsthatwillbeinstalledinthefuturesubmarines.However,itisexpectedthatthesubmarineswillbeequippedwithanext-generationnuclearreactorthatissmaller,moreefficient,andmorereliablethanthePWR2reactorsusedinthecurrentVanguard-classsubmarines.Thenewreactorwillbedesignedtoprovidegreaterpoweroutput,whichwillenablethesubmarinestotravelfasterandremainsubmergedforlongerperiodsoftime.
