Abstract
Systemcallsarethefoundationoftheoperatingsystemkernel.Itisresponsibleforprovidingabridgebetweenuserspaceandkernelspaceintheoperatingsystem.Linuxsystemcallsaredesignedtoprovidethebasicfunctionalityrequiredforuserprograms.However,asthecomplexityofmodernsystemsincrease,sodoestheneedformoreadvancedsystemcalls.Inthispaper,wewilldiscusstheneedforextendingLinuxsystemcallsandthevariousmethodsavailabletoachievethisgoal.
Introduction
Linuxisanopen-sourceoperatingsystemthathasgainedimmensepopularityovertheyears.Itiswidelyusedintheservers,embeddedsystems,mobiledevices,anddesktopcomputers.OneoftheprimaryreasonsforthepopularityofLinuxisitsrobustnessandtheabilitytocustomizethekernelaccordingtotheuser'sspecificrequirements.TheLinuxkerneldefinesasetofsystemcallsthatcanbeusedbyuserspaceprogramstointeractwiththekernel.
Systemcallsarethefoundationoftheoperatingsystemkernel.Theyprovideamechanismforuserspaceapplicationstoaccessthekernel'sfunctionality.Linuxsystemcallsaredesignedtoprovidethebasicfunctionalityrequiredforuserprograms.Thesystemcallsperformtaskssuchasfileoperations,processmanagement,memorymanagement,inter-processcommunication,andsoon.However,asthecomplexityofthemodernsystemskeepsincreasing,theneedformoreadvancedsystemcallsalsoincreases.
Inthispaper,wewilldiscusstheneedforextendingLinuxsystemcallsandthevariousmethodsavailabletoachievethisgoal.
WhyExtendLinuxSystemCalls?
ThesystemcallsinLinuxkernelaredesignedtocatertothebasicneedsoftheuserprograms.However,asthecomplexityoftheapplicationsgrows,theneedformoreadvancedsystemcallsalsoincreases.TherearevariousreasonsforextendingLinuxsystemcalls:
