Abstract:
Virtualreality(VR)displayshavebecomeincreasinglypopularinrecentyearsduetotheirabilitytoofferimmersiveandinteractiveexperiences.However,onekeyissuewithVRdisplaysistheirlatency,whichcannegativelyimpacttheuserexperience.Inthispaper,weproposeanimprovedmethodfortestingthelatencyperformanceofVRdisplaysaswellasasuitabletestsetuptoaddressthisissue.
Introduction:
Latencyisthetimeittakesforasystemtorespondtoaninput.InthecontextofVRdisplays,itreferstothetimeittakesforthesystemtoupdatetheimageonthedisplayafterreceivinginputfromtheuser'smovements.Ahigherlatencycanleadtomotionsicknessandalessimmersiveexperience,makingtheuserfeeldisconnectedfromthevirtualenvironment.
Inrecentyears,VRdisplayshavebecomeincreasinglyadvanced,leadingtoimprovementsinlatency.However,measuringlatencyaccuratelyremainsachallenge.Themostcommonmethodformeasuringlatencyissimulatinganinputwithabuttonpressandmeasuringthetimeittakesforthedisplaytoupdate.Whilethismethodprovidesageneralideaoflatency,itdoesnotaccuratelyrepresentreal-worldscenarioswhereusersaremakingcontinuousmovements.
ProposedMethod:
Toaddressthislimitation,weproposeanimprovedmethodformeasuringlatencythatmoreaccuratelysimulatesreal-worldscenarios.Thismethodinvolvesusingamotion-trackingdevicetosimulatecontinuousmovement,suchastheuser'sheadmovements.ThemotiontrackersendsinputtotheVRdisplay,andthetimeittakesforthedisplaytoupdateismeasured.Thismethodprovidesamoreaccuraterepresentationoflatencyinreal-worldscenarios.
TestSetup:
Toimplementtheproposedmethod,werecommendtheuseofasuitabletestsetup.Thetestsetupshouldincludethefollowingcomponents:
1.MotionTracker–Thisdevicetrackstheuser'smovementsandsendsinputtotheVRdisplay.
2.VRDisplay–Thedisplaybeingtestedforlatency.
3.DataAcquisitionDevice–Thisdevicerecordsthelatencymeasurements.
4.Computer–Thecomputerisusedtosynchronizethemotiontrackeranddataacquisitiondeviceandtoconductdataanalysis.
5.Software–Thesoftwareisusedtoanalyzethedatacollectedduringthelatencytest.
