TheUnitedStatesCoastGuard(USCG)recentlyreleasedtherulesregardingtheuseofLong-RangeIdentificationandTracking(LRIT)systems.LRITsystemsareusedbyshipstotransmitpositionreportstoashore-basedcenter,allowingauthoritiestomonitorshipmovementsintheocean.TheUSCGhasimplementedtheserulestoensuresafetyandsecurityinthemaritimedomain.
TheLRITsystemhasbecomeanessentialtoolformaritimeauthoritiestotrackandmonitorthemovementsofships.Thesystemenablesareliableandaccuratetransmissionofposition,date,andtimeinformationfromshipstoshore.Thisinformationisthenusedbyauthoritiestotracktheship’smovements,preventpotentialemergencies,anddetectillegalactivities.TheLRITsystemisacriticaltoolforpreventingmaritimeaccidents,terrorism,andcriminalactivities,suchassmugglingandillegalfishing.
TheUSCGhasreleasedtherulesregardingtheuseofLRITsystemstoensurethattheyarebeingusedeffectivelyandcorrectly.TherulesapplytoallvesselsthataresubjecttotheinternationalLRITrequirementssetbytheInternationalMaritimeOrganization(IMO).TherulesrequirevesselsequippedwithLRITsystemstotransmitpositionreportsatintervalsofsixhourswhileinoceanicorcoastalwaters.Thereportsmustincludethevessel’sidentity,position,course,speed,andotherrelateddata.TheUSCGalsorequiresvesselstoallowauthoritiestoaccesstheirLRITdataatanytime.
TherulessetbytheUSCGaimtoensurethatLRITsystemsareusedproperlyandareeffectiveinimprovingmaritimesafetyandsecurity.TheUSCGhasrecognizedtheimportanceofthesesystemsandhasmadeeffortstoensurethattheyareusedtotheirfullestpotential.TheUSCGhasalsorecognizedtheneedforinternationalcooperationintheuseofLRITsystems.TheUSCGencouragesothercountriestoimplementsimilarrulesandregulationstoensurethattheLRITsystemisbeingusedtoitsfullestpotentialglobally.
