CurrentStatusofEnglishDisciplineConstruction TheconstructionofEnglishasaprofessionaldisciplinehasbeengainingmomentumsincethebeginningofthe21stcentury.AccordingtostatisticsfromtheMinistryofEducationinChina,therewere338undergraduateEnglishmajorsinChinain2000,andthenumberhasnowincreasedtomorethan1,000.Inaddition,thereareover500Englishmaster'sanddoctoralprogramsacrossthecountry.Moreover,mostoftheuniversitiesandcollegeshavesetupEnglishresearchinstitutesandcenters,whichaimtopromoteinterdisciplinaryresearchinEnglishliterature,linguistics,translation,andculture. ProblemsinEnglishDisciplineConstruction However,despitetheprogressmadeinEnglishdisciplineconstruction,therearesomeproblemsthatneedtobeaddressed.Firstly,thecurriculumdesignofEnglishmajorvariesgreatlyamonginstitutions,rangingfromtraditionallanguageskillstrainingcoursestothemoreinterdisciplinaryandspecializedcoursesthatintegrateknowledgeandskillsfromdiversefieldssuchaseconomics,law,andinternationalrelations.ThisleadstounevenqualityofEnglisheducationandafragmentedjobmarketforgraduates.
