Abstract:
Thispaperaimstoexploretheeffectivenessofgrass-sandwindbreaksofdifferentsizesintermsofwindproofandsandfixationbenefitsatthesouthernedgeoftheTenggerDesert.TheTenggerDesert,locatedinnorthernChina,isoneofthelargestandmostactivedesertsinthecountry.Itposessignificantchallengestolocalecologicalsystemsandhumansettlementsduetoitsstrongwindsandshiftingsanddunes.Establishingeffectivewindbreaksiscrucialformitigatingtheadverseeffectsofdesertification.Thisresearchinvestigatestheinfluenceofvariousgrass-sandwindbreaksizesontheircapacitytocontrolwinderosionandstabilizesanddunes.
Introduction:
Desertificationisaglobalenvironmentalissuethatthreatensecosystemsandhumancommunitiesalike.Oneofthekeyfactorscontributingtodesertificationiswinderosion,whichisparticularlyprevalentinaridandsemiaridregions.InChina,theTenggerDesertpresentsaformidablechallengeduetoitsproximitytohighlypopulatedareas.Itis,therefore,importanttodevelopeffectivemethodsforsandfixationandwindproofingtoprotectagainstdesertificationinthisregion.
Methodology:
ThisstudyconductedafieldexperimentinthesouthernedgeoftheTenggerDesert.Severalgrass-sandwindbreaksofdifferentsizesanddimensionswereconstructedandmonitoredforaperiodoftime.Dataonwindspeed,sanddeposition,andsanderosionwerecollectedandanalyzedtodeterminetheeffectivenessofthewindbreaks.
Results:
Theresultsofthestudyshowedthatgrass-sandwindbreaksofdifferentsizessignificantlyreducedwindspeedandeffectivelytrappedandfixedsand.Theefficiencyofwinderosioncontrolandsandfixationwasfoundtovarywiththesizeandheightofthewindbreaks.Largerwindbreaksweremoreeffectiveinreducingwindspeed,whileshorterwindbreaksweremoreefficientintrappingsand.Itwasalsoobservedthattherewasacriticalheightandwidthatwhichthewindbreaksprovidedmaximumprotectionagainsterosion.
Discussion:
Thefindingsofthisstudyhaveimportantimplicationsfordesertificationcontroleffor
