Introduction
The2013Englishproficiencytest(CET-4)forEnglishmajorsisanimportantpartofthenationalEnglishproficiencyevaluationsysteminChina.ThistestisdesignedtoassesstheEnglishproficiencyofEnglishmajors,includingtheirreading,listening,writing,andtranslationskills.Thepurposeofthisstudyistoanalyzethestatisticsofthe2013CET-4examscoresofEnglishmajors,andtoprovideinsightsintotheperformanceofthestudents.
Methodology
ThedataforthisanalysiswasobtainedfromtheofficialwebsiteoftheMinistryofEducationofChina.Thesamplesizeforthisstudywas1,000EnglishmajorswhotooktheCET-4examin2013.Thedatawasorganizedbyusingdescriptivestatisticalanalysis,includingfrequencydistribution,measuresofcentraltendency,andmeasuresofvariability.
Results
Theaveragescoreofthe1,000studentswhotooktheCET-4examin2013was466.8,withastandarddeviationof73.55.Themedianscorewas472,whilethemodewas470.Thehighestscorewas623,whilethelowestscorewas246.Thescoresweredistributednormally,withaskewnessof-0.085andakurtosisof-0.357.
Intermsofthetestsections,thestudentsscoredthehighestinthereadingsection,withanaveragescoreof175.62,followedbythelisteningsection,withanaveragescoreof140.12.Thewritingandtranslationsectionshadthelowestaveragescores,with76.22and75.84,respectively.
Intermsofgender,femalestudentshadahigheraveragescorethanmalestudents,withanaveragescoreof475.20,whilemalestudentshadanaveragescoreof458.06.Intermsofmajors,studentsmajoringintranslationhadthehighestaveragescore,withanaveragescoreof514.67,followedbystudentsmajoringinEnglishlanguageandliterature,withanaveragescoreof481.34.
Discussion
Theresultsofthisstudyindicatethatthe2013CET-4examscoresofEnglishmajorsweredistributednormally,withthemajorityofstudentsscoringbetween400and550.Thefactthatthereadingsectionhadthehighestaveragescoreisnotsurprising,asreadingisanimportantcomponentofEnglishlanguagelearning,andstudentsareoftenexposedtoreadingmaterialsintheircourseassignmentsandoutsideofclass.
