Introduction
Waterjellyfisharecommonmarineinvertebratesfoundintheworld'soceans.Theyareknownfortheiruniquephysicalcharacteristicssuchasgelatinousbodies,stingingtentacles,andanotableabilitytoreproduce.WaterjellyfishbelongtothephylumCnidariaandaremadeupofabasecalledthepolypandabell-shapedstructurecalledthemedusa.Thereareseveralspeciesofwaterjellyfishthatliveindifferenthabitatswithintheocean.Inthesummerof2011,threelargewaterjellyfishspecieswerestudiedintheJiaozhouBayareainChina.Thispaperwillexplorethepopulationdynamicsofthesethreejellyfishspeciesandthefactorsthataffectedtheirabundanceduringthesummerseason.
Background
Waterjellyfishareknownfortheirrapidreproductiveabilities.Theycanreproduceasexuallyorsexually,andtheirlifecycleinvolvesbothapolypandmedusastage.Thepolypstageisstationaryandattachedtoasubstratewhilethemedusastagecanswimfreelyandmovewiththeoceancurrents.Themedusastageisthedominantstageofwaterjellyfishandiswhatpeopletypicallythinkofwhenreferringtojellyfish.
Jellyfishbloomsarecommonoccurrencesintheoceanandareoftenrelatedtoanthropogenicfactorssuchasoverfishing,pollution,andclimatechange.Duringabloom,jellyfishcanbecomeanuisancetohumansastheycanclogfishingnets,depletefisherman'scatch,andcausedamagetomarineinfrastructuresuchaspowerplants.Understandingthepopulationdynamicsofwaterjellyfishspeciesiscrucialtopredicting,preventing,andmanagingjellyfishblooms.
MaterialsandMethods
ThestudywasconductedinJiaozhouBay,locatedintheYellowSeaontheeasterncoastofChina.Threespeciesofwaterjellyfishwerestudied:Rhopilemaesculentum,Aureliaaurita,andNemopilemanomurai.DatawascollectedmonthlyfromMaytoSeptember2011byusingaplanktonnettocollectjellyfishsamples.Thesampleswereidentified,counted,andmeasuredinthelaboratory.
Results
TheresultsofthestudyshowedthatallthreespeciesofwaterjellyfishpeakedinabundanceinAugust.ThedominantspeciesduringthisperiodwastheRhopilemaesculentum.Thisspeciesaccountedforover80%ofthejellyfishpopulationduringAugust.TheAureliaauritaandNemopilemanom
