Introduction
TheUniversalSerialBus(USB)interfacehasbecomeanessentialpartofmoderncomputersystems.Itallowsdevicestoconnecttocomputersfordataexchange,communication,andpowersupply.USB2.0isawidelyusedversionoftheUSBinterfacethatoffershigh-speeddatatransferratesandbackwardcompatibilitywithUSB1.1devices.TheISP1581isaUSB2.0interfacecontrollerthatcanbeusedtodesignUSBdevices.ThispaperwilldiscussthedesignofaUSB2.0interfacebasedontheISP1581.
OverviewofISP1581
TheISP1581isaUSB2.0interfacecontrollerchipthatoperatesatamaximumspeedof480Mbps.Ithasan8051-compatiblemicrocontrollercore,on-chipRAM,andROMforstoringfirmware.Itincludesa24MHzcrystaloscillatorforclockgeneration,aPLLforfrequencymultiplication,andotherperipheralssuchastimers,interruptcontrollers,andserialports.TheISP1581supportsmultipleendpointsfordatatransfer,andithasabuilt-inDMAengineforefficientdatatransfer.Thechipalsosupportspowermanagementfeaturessuchassuspend,resume,andremotewakeup.
DesignRequirements
ThedesignrequirementsfortheUSB2.0interfacebasedontheISP1581areasfollows:
1.Provideahigh-speedUSB2.0interfacefordatatransferbetweenthedeviceandthehostcomputer.
2.Supportmultipledeviceendpointsfordatatransfer.
3.ImplementUSBpowermanagementfeaturessuchassuspend,resume,andremotewakeup.
4.UsetheISP1581astheinterfacecontrollerchipandprogramitwithfirmwaretosupporttherequiredfunctionality.
5.Provideahardwaredesignthatiscompact,efficient,andreliable.
SystemArchitecture
ThesystemarchitectureoftheUSB2.0interfacebasedontheISP1581isshowninFigure1.TheinterfaceconsistsoftheISP1581chip,acrystaloscillator,anEEPROMforstoringconfigurationdata,powermanagementcircuitry,USBconnectors,andothercomponentsasrequiredbythespecificdevice.
TheISP1581chipistheheartoftheinterface.Itinterfaceswiththedevice'smicrocontrollerorprocessortomanageUSBcommunication.ThecrystaloscillatorprovidestheclocksignaltotheISP1581,whichgeneratestheUSBdatasignals.TheEEPROMcontainsconfigurationinformationfortheinterface,suchasthedevicedescriptor,configura
