PrincipleofFEDs FEDsworkontheprincipleoffieldemission,whereelectronsareemittedfromasharptipandacceleratedtowardsaphosphor-coatedscreenbyastrongelectricfield.Thistechnologyeliminatestheneedforbulkycathoderaytubes(CRTs)andbacklightunits(BLUs)usedinliquidcrystaldisplays(LCDs)andorganiclight-emittingdiodes(OLEDs),respectively.FEDsconsistofanarrayofmicroscopictipsarrangedonacathodeandaphosphor-coatedanodeplacedatashortdistancefromthetips.Whenavoltageisappliedacrossthecathodeandanode,electronsareemittedfromthetipsandstrikethephosphor-coatedanode,producinglight. EnergyConsumptionofFEDs TheenergyconsumptionofFEDsisaffectedbyvariousfactors,suchasthesizeandnumberoftheFEDs,thevoltageappliedacrossthecathodeandanode,andtheefficiencyofthephosphorcoating.ThepowerconsumptionofFEDscanbecalculatedasfollows: PowerConsumption=VoltagexCurrent ThevoltageappliedtoFEDsrangesfromafewhundredvoltstoafewkilovolts,dependingonthesizeandnumberoftheFEDs.ThecurrentrequiredtoilluminatethephosphorcoatingofFEDsisintheorderofafewmicroamperes,makingFEDsconsumesignificantlylesspowerthanotherdisplaytechnologies.Forexample,a24-inchLCDmonitorconsumesaround50wattsofpower,whileanFEDmonitorofthesamesizeconsumesonlyaround20watts.
