Abstract
Withtheadvancementoftechnology,computernumericalcontrol(CNC)systemshavebecomeanessentialcomponentinthemanufacturingindustry.OneoftheCNCsystemsthathavegainedpopularityistheLinux-basedfive-axislinkedelectricaldischargemachining(EDM)system.Thissystemhasimprovedaccuracy,efficiency,andproductqualityintheEDMprocess.Thispaperexploresthearchitecture,workingprinciple,andadvantagesoftheLinux-basedfive-axislinkedEDMsystem.
Introduction
EDMprocessisapopularmethodusedformachininghighlycomplexshapesandhighhardnessmaterials.TheEDMprocessinvolvestheuseofanelectrode,whichisnegativelycharged,andtheworkpiece,whichispositivelycharged.Thevoltagedifferencebetweenthetwocreatessparksthatremovealayeroftheworkpiece'smaterial,leadingtotheformationofacavity.Inrecentyears,five-axislinkedEDMsystemshavebecomepopularduetotheirprecisionandefficiency.
Linux-basedfive-axislinkedEDMsystem
ThearchitectureoftheLinux-basedfive-axislinkedEDMsystemcomprisestwomajorcomponents:thehardwareandsoftware.Thehardwaresectionincludesthemachinetool,powersupply,workpieceholder,robotarm,andfive-axislinkedCNCcontroller.ThemachinetoolisresponsiblefortheEDMprocessandfeaturesfive-axislinkedmovementforenhancedprecision.Thepowersupplyisusedtoprovideahighvoltagedischargebetweentheelectrodeandworkpiece,creatingthesparksthatremovematerialfromtheworkpiece.TheworkpieceholderisusedtoholdtheworkpieceinplaceduringtheEDMprocess.Therobotarmaidsinautomatedloadingandunloadingandelectrodereplacement.Finally,thefive-axislinkedCNCcontrollercontrolsthehardwareandsoftwarecomponentsofthesystem.
Thesoftwaresectionincludestheoperatingsystem,thefive-axislinkedCNCsystem,andthemachinelanguagecompiler.TheLinuxoperatingsystemprovidesastableandreliableplatformfortheCNCsystem.Thefive-axislinkedCNCsystemprocessestheCAD/CAMdataandgeneratesamachinecodethatcontrolsthemovementofthemachinetoolandrobotarm.Themachinelanguagecompilerconvertsthemachinecodeintosignalsforcontrollingthemachinetoolandrobotarmmovement.
