Introduction
Fiberamplifiershavebeenextensivelyusedinthefieldofopticalcommunication,sensing,andsignalprocessing.Theyofferadvantagessuchaslonglifetime,reliability,highgain,andlownoisecomparedtotraditionalamplifiers.Theperformanceoffiberamplifierscanbeimprovedbyoptimizingthematerialandstructureoffiber.Ytterbium(Yb)-dopeddouble-cladfiberisoneofthemostwidelyusedfibermaterialsduetoitshighefficiencyandexcellentpowerscalability.Inthisstudy,weinvestigatethecharacteristicsofaYb-dopeddouble-cladfiberamplifierwithanadditionallayerofytterbiumconcentration.
Methods
TheYb-dopeddouble-cladfiberamplifierconsistsofaYb-dopedcore,apumpcladding,andsignalcladding.WeaddedanadditionallayerofYbconcentrationbetweenthecoreandpumpcladdingtoformadoubleYbconcentrationstructure.Thepumplightwasinjectedintothepumpcladding,andthesignallightwasinjectedintothecore.Wemeasuredtheoutputpowerandgainoftheamplifierforvariousinputsignalpowersandpumppowers.WealsoinvestigatedtheeffectofYbconcentrationontheperformanceoftheamplifier.
Results
WeobservedthatthedoubleYbconcentrationstructurehasasignificantimpactontheperformanceoftheamplifier.TheadditionoftheYbconcentrationlayerincreasedthepumpabsorptionandincreasedthepopulationinversioninthefiber.Asaresult,theamplifierhadahighergain,alargeroutputpower,andalowerthresholdpowercomparedtotheconventionalYb-dopeddouble-cladfiberamplifier.Thegainandoutputpoweroftheamplifierincreasedwiththeinputsignalpowerandpumppower.Themaximumgainwasachievedataninputsignalpowerof200mWandapumppowerof100W.WealsofoundthattheYbconcentrationoftheadditionallayershouldbeoptimizedtobalancetheabsorptionandre-absorptionofthepumplight.
Discussion
ThedoubleYbconcentrationstructurehasseveraladvantagesovertheconventionalYb-dopeddouble-cladfiberamplifier.First,theadditionalYbconcentrationlayerimprovesthepumpabsorption,whichreducestherequiredpumppowerandincreasestheefficiencyoftheamplifier.Second,thedoubleYbconcentrati
