I.UnderstandingtheChallenges: 1.Limitedvocabulary:Englishmajorfreshmenoftenpossessalimitedrangeofvocabulary,hinderingtheirabilitytocomprehendcomplextexts. 2.Lackofreadingstrategies:Manystudentslackeffectivereadingstrategies,suchasskimming,scanning,summarizing,ormakinginferences. 3.Culturaldifferences:Englishliteratureandacademictextsmaycontainculturalreferencesthatareunfamiliartonon-nativeEnglishspeakers,makingcomprehensionchallenging. 4.Timeconstraint:Englishmajorfreshmenoftenfaceaheavycourseload,leavinglimitedtimeforextensivereading. II.TeachingStrategies: 1.VocabularyDevelopment: a)Pre-readingactivities:Introduceandexplainessentialvocabularybeforereadingtoenhancecomprehensionandreadingspeed. b)Vocabularybuildingexercises:Engagestudentsinactivitieslikesynonymorantonymidentification,context-basedwordusage,andwordassociationtobroadentheirvocabulary. 2.ReadingStrategies: a)Pre-readingtasks:Providestudentswithpre-readingactivitiessuchaspredictingcontent,brainstormingideasrelatedtothetopic,ordiscussingpersonalopinions.Thishelpsstudentsactivatetheirpriorknowledgeandestablishconnectionswiththetext. b)Guidedreading:Encouragestudentstoannotateimportantinformation,highlightunfamiliarwords,andaskquestionsduringreading.Thisfostersactiveengagementandcomprehension. c)Post-readingtasks:Engagestudentsinactivitiesthatassesscomprehension,suchassummarizingthemainidea,identifyingsupportingdetails,oraskingcriticalquestionsrelatedtothetext. 3.CulturalAwareness: a)Introduceculturalreferences:Providebackgroundinformationonculturalreferencespresentinthereadingmaterials,helpingstudentsgraspthecontextandunderstandculturalnuances.
