ThetitleofprofessorFanZhongying'sbook,AnAppliedTheoryofTranslation,isbothappropriatedandfullyjustified,forthetheoryproposedinthisvolumehasbeenappliedbyFanZhongyingandhisstudentstoawidevarietyoftexts.Thisisoneoftheprincipalreasonswhythistextissobroadlyapplicabletosomanyoftheconstantlyrecurringproblemsfacedbyalltranslators.Moreover,itdemonstratesquiteclearlythattranslalationpracticewithoutanadequatetheoryproducesonlyhaphazardresults,whiletheorywithoutpracticeiscompletelysterile.
Withtheinsightgainedfromexperienceandabroadknowledgeofhowlanguageswork,FanZhongyinghascombined“ruleswithreasons,”thatis,hehasshownhow"rulesofthumb,,arenotenoughfortranslators.Theymustalsoknowthereasonsforsuchrules,sinceonlythencantheybeappliedwithinsightanddiscrimination.
