ThiscoursenamedTranslationTheoryandPracticeaimsatcultivatingtheSS’abilityoftranslatingbetweenE-CandC-E—theyhavetheabilitytounderstandandmastersomebasictheoriesandtechniquesabouttranslation.E.g.thebriefhistoryofChineseandwesterntranslationtheory,thedifferencesbetweenEandC,theeightbasictechniquesintranslation,somemethodstodealwiththespecialsentences,etc.Inaword,theSSwillhavethefirstimpressiontoEnglishlanguageandChinese,andthroughthesediscussionstheywillhaveahigherabilityintheirEnglishwriting.Itwilltakeusatleastaspanof4lecturestofinishonetopicinthesyllabus.Topassthiscourse,studentsmustattainanaverageof60%inthefollowingcategories:
Participating:10%
Participatingisvitaltothelearningprocessanditincludesattendances,beingontimes,comingtoclassprepared,interactingwithotherstudents,andparticipatinginclassroomdiscussions.Studentswhoarefrequentlyabsent,tardy,orrefusetoparticipatewillreceiveapoorparticipationgrade.Note:thereareNOexcusedabsences.Anyabsencesortardywillresultinalowerparticipationgrade.Homework:20%
Studentswillhavetocompleteperiodichomeworkassignmentsrelatedtothiscourse.(Includingreviewingandpreviewingthetext,etc)Theteachermayalsogivehomework/assignmentsoneachtopicdiscussedintheclassifthereisaneed.
Tests:70%
Therewillbeonlyonetest:afinal.Buttheremayalsobeseveralshortquizzesthroughtheterm.
Attendance:
Dailyattendancewillberecorded.Eachdayastudentwillget1.5points.0.5pointforattendance,0.5pointforbeingontime,and0.5pointforparticipatingindiscussionandinteractingpositivelywithfellowclassmates.Classroompolices:
Latework:Assignmentsmustbeturnedinontheduedateforfullcredit.Unlessotherwiseindicated,allassignmentswillbedueatthebeginningoftheclassperiod.Assignmentsthatareturnedinlatewilllose5%perday.
CopyingandPlagiarism:
Studentsshoulddotheirownworkinordertomaximizelearning.Collaboratingonassignmentsispermitted,butcopyinganotherstudent’sworkisprohibited.Similarly,studentswhoarecaughtcopyingorplagiarizingwillfailtheas
