Introduction:
Englishasagloballanguageisthemostwidelyspokenlanguageintheworld.Itisusedforcommunicationpurposesamongpeoplefromdifferentcountries,cultures,andbackgrounds.Inrecentyears,Englishhasbecomeanessentiallanguageinvariousfieldssuchasbusiness,engineering,medicine,education,andscience.However,teachingspokenEnglishtonon-EnglishmajorsisasignificantchallengeforEnglishlanguageteachers.Thepurposeofthispaperistoexplorethechallenges,methods,andstrategiesforteachingspokenEnglishtonon-Englishmajors.
Challenges:
Non-EnglishmajorsarenotproficientinEnglishlanguageskillsastheyhardlyusethemintheireverydaylives.Theylackproperpronunciation,vocabulary,andgrammar.Studentsmayfinditdifficulttoexpresstheirideasduetothelackofadequatelanguageskills.Fearofmakingmistakes,anxiety,andshynesscansignificantlyimpacttheirabilitytolearnEnglish.Additionally,thereareculturaldifferencesthatcouldinterferewithlanguagecomprehensionandhindercommunication.Therefore,itisessentialtoaddressthesechallengesbeforeteachingspokenEnglishtonon-Englishmajors.
Methods:
Themosteffectiveteachingmethodfornon-Englishmajorsiscommunicativelanguageteaching(CLT).CLTemphasizescreatingreal-lifesituationsthatreflectthenaturaluseoflanguage.Theaimistoteachstudentstheuseoflanguageratherthanfocusingontherulesandstructures.Instructorsshouldimplementacommunicativeapproachthatgivesstudentstheopportunitytoengageinconversationtoimprovetheirlisteningandspeakingskills.
Anothermethodthatcanbeusedistask-basedlanguageteaching(TBLT).ItinvolvesteachingEnglishthroughpracticaltasksthatconnectsubjectcontentwithlanguageproficiency.TBLTisidealfornon-EnglishmajorsasitincreasestheirmotivationandinterestinlearningEnglish.Studentsaretaskedwitheverydayactivitiessuchasmakingphonecalls,orderingfood,andconductingjobinterviewsinEnglish.
Strategies:
