Nowadays,Englishhasbecomeagloballanguage,whichmakesitanessentialtoolforcommunicationindifferentfieldsoflifesuchasbusiness,science,education,andinternationalrelations.Non-Englishmajorstudentsoftenfacedifficultieslearningthelanguagebecauseitisnottheirfirstlanguage.Therefore,thepurposeofthispaperistoexploretheissuesthatnon-EnglishmajorstudentsfaceinlearningEnglish.
Challenges
Oneofthemainchallengesthatnon-Englishmajorstudentsfaceispronunciation.Englishpronunciationisoftendifficultfornon-EnglishspeakersbecauseEnglishhassignificantlydifferentphonemesthanotherlanguages.Thisleadstolearnersacquiringincorrectpronunciation,whichaffectstheircommunicationskills.Moreover,learningEnglishgrammar,vocabulary,andsyntaxcouldalsobechallenging.Englishisacomplexlanguage,andtherearemanyexceptionstotherules,whichareoftendifficulttograsp.Manywordsalsohavemultiplemeaningsandusage,whichcanleadtoambiguityandconfusion.
Anotherissueisthelackofinterestandmotivation.Non-Englishmajorstudentsmayinitiallylackinterestinlearningthelanguagesinceitisnottheirprimaryfocus.However,Englishlanguageproficiencyisanessentialskillforcareerprogressionandpersonaldevelopment.Therefore,teachersmusttrytomotivatelearnerstotakeaninterestinlearningthelanguage.Usinginteractiveandengagingteachingmethods,incorporatingtheuseoftechnology,andprovidingstudentswithregularfeedbackaresomeofthewaystoincreasemotivation.
Cultureandcontextareotherchallengesthatnon-Englishmajorstudentsface.Englishisstronglyrelatedtowesternculture,andnon-Englishspeakersmaynotunderstandtheculturalreferencesandcontextualmeanings.Thiscouldleadtomisunderstandingsandmiscommunications.Toovercomethis,itisimportantforteacherstoprovideculturalandcontextualexplanationsduringlanguagelearning.
Solutions
Toaddressthechallengesfacedbynon-Englishmajorstudents,severalsolutionscanbeimplemented.Firstly,teacherscanuseasystematicandstructuredapproachtoteachinglanguage,focusingonpronunciation,grammar,vocabulary,syntax,andcontext.Secondly,teache
