Introduction
WiththeincreasingglobalizationandthepopularityofEnglishasalinguafranca,Englishhasbecomeanessentialtoolofcommunication,notonlyinacademicsettingsbutalsoindailylife.Manyuniversitiesinnon-Englishspeakingcountrieshaveshiftedfromtraditionalteachingmodelsthatfocusedongrammarandvocabularytocommunicativelanguageteaching(CLT)thatemphasizesthedevelopmentoflearners'communicativecompetencethroughmeaningfulcommunication.However,manynon-EnglishspeakingstudentsstillfinditchallengingtocommunicateeffectivelyinEnglish,especiallyinoralcommunication.ThispaperaimstoinvestigatethecurrentsituationofEnglishoralcommunicationamongnon-Englishmajorfreshmen,analyzethefactorsthataffecttheiroralcommunicationability,andprovidesomestrategiestoimprovetheircommunicativecompetence.
Currentsituation
Basedonthesurveyconductedinouruniversity,nearly90%ofnon-EnglishmajorfreshmenreportedthattheirEnglishoralcommunicationabilityisbelowaverageorpoor.Theyindicatedthattheyoftenstruggletofindtherightwords,expresstheirideasclearly,andunderstandnativespeakers'responses.ManyofthemarehesitanttospeakinEnglish,feelanxiousorembarrassedwhenspeaking,andavoidcommunicatingwithnativespeakersorinternationalstudents.
Thereasonswhynon-EnglishmajorfreshmenstrugglewiththeirEnglishoralcommunicationabilityaremultifaceted.Firstly,theylackopportunitiestopracticespeakinginEnglishoutsidetheclassroom.ManyofthemonlypracticetheiroralskillsduringtheEnglishclassesorexams,whichareusuallyformalandlimited.Secondly,theylackconfidenceintheirEnglishproficiency.Manynon-EnglishmajorfreshmenhavelimitedexposuretoEnglishbeforeenteringtheuniversityandfindthelanguagedaunting.Thirdly,theylackknowledgeofEnglishcultureandnorms,whichaffectstheirabilitytocommunicateeffectivelywithnativespeakersorinternationalstudents.Theymaynotunderstandidioms,intonation,orgesturesandmaymisinterpretculturaldifferences,leadingtomisunderstandingsorconflicts.
