CatalystsforBDODehydrogenation ThecommonlyusedcatalystsforBDOdehydrogenationaremetaloxidesandsalts,suchascopperoxide,silveroxide,palladium,platinum,andgold.Ofthese,copperoxidehasbeenextensivelystudiedandfoundtobeaneffectivecatalystforBDOdehydrogenationduetoitshighactivityandstabilityathightemperatures.ThemechanismofBDOdehydrogenationovercopperoxidecatalystinvolvestheadsorptionofBDOonthesurfaceofthecatalyst,followedbydehydrogenationtoformanintermediatethatsubsequentlyundergoescyclizationtoformGBL. Recentstudieshavefocusedonimprovingtheeffectivenessofcopperoxidecatalyststhroughmodificationssuchasdopingwithmetalandnon-metalatoms,reduction,andadditionofpromoters.Variousdopingagentsincludingzinc,tin,andtitaniumhavebeenfoundtoenhancethecatalyticactivityofcopperoxidetowardsBDOdehydrogenation.Similarly,theadditionofpromoterssuchaspotassium,sodium,andcesiumenhancestheactivityandselectivityofcopperoxidecatalysts. AnotherapproachtoimprovetheefficiencyofBDOdehydrogenationisbymodifyingthemorphologyofthecatalyst.Studieshaveshownthatcopperoxidenanoparticlesexhibithigheractivitythanbulkcopperoxideduetotheirhighersurfaceareaandimproveddispersionproperties. ProcessforBDODehydrogenation TheprocessforBDOdehydrogenationtoGBLinvolvesheatingamixtureofBDOandacatalysttoahightemperature,typicallybetween200-300°C.Thereactioniscarriedoutunderaninertatmospheretopreventoxidationofthecatalyst.
