Introduction
Phosphorescenceisaphenomenoninwhichasubstanceabsorbsenergyintheformoflightandthenre-emitsitaslightoverarelativelylongperiodoftime.Themostcommonlystudiedphosphorescentcompoundsaremadeupofheavymetalcomplexes,suchasiridium,platinum,andmanganeseions.Inthisstudy,wefocusonthemanganese(II)complexof1,3-bis(diphenylphosphoryl)propane(Mn(DPPP)2),whichexhibitsphosphorescenceandvapor-inducedcolorchangeproperties.
ExperimentalMethods
TheMn(DPPP)2complexwassynthesizedbymixingMnCl2·4H2OandDPPPintetrahydrofuranatroomtemperaturefor24hours,followedbyrecrystallizationintoluene.ThepurifiedproductwascharacterizedbyNMRandIRspectroscopyandelementalanalysis.
PhosphorescencemeasurementswereconductedusingaFluoromax-4Pspectrofluorometerequippedwithanintegratingsphere.Sampleswereexcitedat355nmandtheemissionspectrawererecordedbetween380and800nm.
Vapor-inducedcolorchangeexperimentswereperformedbyexposingtheMn(DPPP)2complextovariousorganicvapors.Thecolorchangeswereobservedvisuallyandconfirmedbymeasuringtheabsorbancespectraofthecomplexbeforeandafterexposure.
ResultsandDiscussion
TheMn(DPPP)2complexexhibitedabrightbluephosphorescencewithamaximumemissionataround465nm(Figure1).Thephosphorescenceemissiondecaywasfittedtoasingleexponentialfunctionwithadecaytimeofabout2.7μs.Thephosphorescenceemissionintensitywasdependentontheexcitationwavelength,withthepeakintensityshiftingtolongerwavelengthsastheexcitationwavelengthincreased.
TheMn(DPPP)2complexalsoexhibitedvapor-inducedcolorchangeswhenexposedtovariousorganicvapors,includingwater,ethanol,andacetone.Thecomplexchangedfrombluetogreenuponexposuretowatervapor,frombluetoyellowuponexposuretoethanolvapor,andfrombluetoorangeuponexposuretoacetonevapor(Figure2).Theabsorbancespectraofthecomplexbeforeandafterexposureconfirmedthecolorchanges,withashiftoftheabsorptionmaximumtolongerwavelengths.Theextentofthecolorchangewasdependentonthevaporpressureoftheorganicsolvent,withhighervaporpressureleadingtomorepronouncedcolorchanges.
