Theadventofthefifth-generation(5G)wirelesstechnologyhasrevolutionizedthewaywecommunicate,pavingthewayforfasterspeeds,lowerlatency,andhigherreliability.However,tofullyleveragethepotentialof5G,itiscrucialtounderstandthesignalpropagationmodesandtheselectionofappropriatefrequencybands.Thispaperaimstodelveintotheanalysisof5Gsignalpropagationmodesandthesignificanceoffrequencybandselection.
1.5GSignalPropagationModes:
1.1Line-of-Sight(LOS)Propagation:
IntheLOSpropagationmode,the5Gsignaltravelsdirectlyfromthetransmittertothereceiverwithoutanyobstructions.Thismodeoffersthehighestreliabilityanddatarates.Itissuitablefordenselypopulatedareas,urbanenvironments,andshort-rangecommunicationlinks.
1.2Non-Line-of-Sight(NLOS)Propagation:
UnlikeLOSpropagation,NLOSpropagationinvolvessignaldiffraction,reflection,andscatteringduetoobstacleslikebuildings,trees,andotherphysicalobjects.NLOSpropagationischallengingbutcommonindenseurbanenvironments.Itrequiresadvancedantennatechnologieslikebeamformingandmultiple-inputmultiple-output(MIMO)tomaintainsignalstrengthandquality.
1.3mmWavePropagation:
Millimeter-wave(mmWave)propagationoccursinthefrequencyrangefrom30GHzto300GHz.Itischaracterizedbyhighatmosphericabsorptionandsignificantsignalattenuationduetoitsshortwavelength.Consequently,mmWavesignalshavelimitedrangeandarepronetoblockages.However,mmWavetechnologyenablesultra-highdataratesandcapacitybyutilizingnarrowbeamformingandmassiveMIMOtechniques.
2.FrequencyBandSelection:
2.1Sub-6GHzBands:
Thesub-6GHzfrequencybands,includingthelow-band,mid-band,andhigh-bandspectrum,providewidercoverageandbetterpenetrationthroughobstacles.Thelow-band(600MHzto1GHz)offersthebestcoveragebutlimiteddatarates.Themid-band(1GHzto6GHz)strikesabalancebetweencoverageandcapacity,makingitsuitableforurbanareas.Thehigh-band(6GHzto100GHz)offersthehighestdataratesbutlimitedcoverageduetosignalattenuation.
